BOX SCORE

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (12/18/10) –
Junior Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) scored with 47 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the Colgate men's hockey team took the 3-2 overtime loss with Robert Morris scoring 1:03 into the extra frame.

Colgate (3-11-1) got an outstanding start from rookie Eric Mihalik (Avon Lake, Ohio) as he pushed aside a season-high 39 shots in the loss. Smith added his fourth goal of the season and had an assist for two points, while senior Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) netted his third goal in the last two games.

Robert Morris (11-4-2) got the gamewinner from Nathan Longpre with his team leading ninth of the season, coming just over a minute of extra time. Furman South and Denny Urban also added goals for the Colonials with both coming on the power play and in the last minute of the first and second periods. Rookie Eric Levine won the battle between freshmen netminders with 30 saves to earn his second win.

The Colonials took advantage of its second power play opportunity of the game with an extra man goal coming with 53 seconds remaining in the first period. Furman Smith connected on a one-timer, beating Mihalik low. Assists were given to James Lyle and Andrew Blazek. Each team earned two power play chances and Robert Morris was the only team to score. Mihalik finished the period with 15 saves, including a pair of big ones prior to the Colonial score.

Brisebois continued his hot streak with his third goal in the last two games to tie the game at 1-1. The goal came during a delayed penalty and Colgate had the extra attacker. Senior captain Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) found Brisebois and he lifted a backhand to the top shelf to even the score with 12:13 left in the second frame. Smith was also credited with an assist along with Day.

Colgate hurt itself again by going to the box and this time Robert Morris made it count on a 5-on-3 power play. Urban scored on the two-man advantage with the assist to Adam Brace and Longpre. Urban had a pair of wide shots, but his third came from the top of the slot and he put it past Mihalik to get the lead back for the Colonials at 2-1 with 24 seconds left in the second period.

The Raiders gave the Colonials a taste of their own medicine with Smith tallying his fourth of the season with 47 seconds remaining after Robert Morris scored in the final minute of the previous two frames. Smith forced overtime after Colgate pulled Mihalik to give itself a 6-on-4 advantage. Rookie Chris Wagner (Walpole, Mass.) had his shot saved by Levine and Smith was able to find the rebound and put it home. Sophomore Kurtis Bartliff (Clinton, Ont.) was also given an assist on the play.

The Colonials took home the win just 1:03 into the extra period as Longpre scored his team-leading ninth of the season. He took a shot that hit the post and went in as the red light delayed on the score, but eventually was turned on to give the Colonials its first ever win over Colgate in the sixth meeting between the two schools.

The Raiders wee outshot for the second-straight game with a 42-32 advantage going to Robert Morris. Colgate had six chances with the extra skater and scored once, while the Colonials went 2-for-7 on the power play.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m. from Clearview Arena.
