Colgate Men Tripped Up by Quinnipiac

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/13/10) –
The Colgate men's hockey team outshot its opponent for the seventh time in eight games, but Quinnipiac netted three unanswered to goals to defeat the Raiders 3-1 on Saturday night at Starr Rink.

Colgate (2-5-1, 0-3-1 ECAC) came out physical as head coach Don Vaughan started three defensive on the first trip down the ice. Rookie Chris Wagner (Walpole, Mass.) scored the second goal of his career with the assist to sophomore Robbie Bourdon (Montreal, Que.) and senior Wade Poplawski (Winnipeg, Man.). Rookie goaltender Eric Mihalik (Avon Lake, Ohio) played well between the pipes with 24 stops in his first collegiate start.

Quinnipiac (5-4-1, 1-2-1 ECAC) kicked it up a notch after Colgate scored first with three unanswered goals. The Bobcats were led by Scott Zurevinski who netted the first two goals for Quinnipiac, while Connor Jones sealed the deal in the third with a score. Eric Hartzell moved to 2-0 on the year with 30 stops in the win.

The Raiders did what they wanted to do early on. They kept the Bobcats off the board for the first 20 minutes and came out physical. Colgate was outshot in the scoreless period, however, by an 11-9 margin.

Wagner got the scoring started in the second with a goal 58 second into frame. It was his second goal in the last four games and gave the Raiders the important first goal at which they were undefeated going into the game when scoring first. Zurevinski then came back and scored two goals in the final 12 minutes of the frame to give the Bobcats at 2-1 lead into the second intermission. The second came at 18:56 on a delayed penalty and with the extra attacker on the ice.

Jones scored the insurance goal for Quinnipiac with 12:30 remaining in the game and gave the Bobcats their first ECAC Hockey win of the year with the 3-1 win.

The Raiders had six chances on the power play, but failed to capitalize. The Bobcats ended the night going 1-for-8 on the man advantage.

Colgate will be back on the ice next weekend as the Raiders host Brown and third-ranked Yale at Starr Rink.
