STORRS, Conn. (11/17/09)
-- Senior guard Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, but turnovers and rebounding doomed Colgate to a 65-55 loss against Yale in the consolation round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-off at the University of Connecticut on Tuesday.

Yale (1-2) out-rebounded Colgate 38-27, including 21-13 in the first half. Twelve of the Bulldogs' first-half rebounds were on the offensive glass. The Raiders protected the ball well in the first half, but committed 14 turnovers in the second half, including a sequence of five straight to start the half, which sparked a 12-0 run for Yale.

The game opened with a back-and-forth affair, as there were five lead changes in the first nine minutes, before the Raiders built an eight point lead 21-13 off a 10-2 run with 6:15 remaining. The run was capped off with a dunk by sophomore Forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) and a layup by senior Ben Jonson (Dallas, Texas). Yale would respond by scoring seven of the final 10 points to trim the Raiders lead to 30-28 at the half.

Yale would open the second half with a 12-0 run off five consecutive Raider turnovers to lead 40-30 with 13:28 remaining. Colgate would fire back by knocking down three straight three-pointers, two by Roemer to trim the lead to 40-39. But that was as close as the Raiders would get as Yale's Alex Zampier scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the second half to help lead the Bulldogs to the win.

Colgate (0-2) shot 42.2 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. Unfortunately, the Raiders also accrued 19 turnovers.

Gyawu scored 12 points for Colgate while junior shooting guard Mike Venezia (Westfield, N.J.) pitched in 11. Freshman point guard Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.) led the Raiders with seven assists while Jonson posted seven rebounds.

The Raiders will now wait to see where they travel next Monday for the second week of the Preseason NIT.
