The Athletic Academic Support staff provides the student-athletes with guidance with the following principles in mind:
• Encourage student-athletes to explore diverse subjects and enjoy the full liberal arts experience and discuss academic options with their faculty advisor.
• Explore ways to make any field of study a possible path for a student-athlete by working with faculty and coaches on meeting the special needs of the student-athlete.
• Empower student-athletes to independently select courses and professors that align with their academic interests and goals.
• Encourage student-athletes to creating a well-balanced schedule that harmonizes academic commitments with athletic responsibilities, ensuring success both in the classroom and on the field
• Create weekly schedules with set study times to enable the student-athlete to stay on track with their academic workload.
• Collaborate with coaches to minimize the amount of missed class during their playing season.
• Encourage student-athletes to build strong relationships with professors, utilizing office hours and engaging in meaningful academic discussions.
• Promote the Writing and Speaking Center, Center for Learning, Teaching & Research (CLTR), Career Services and other campus resources, including tailored workshops designed specifically for student-athletes to enhance their academic and career readiness.
Individual meetings between student-athletes and Academic Support staff (these may be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly depending on the individual needs of the student athlete)
Each student-athlete meeting follows a similar protocol to ensure comprehensive support:
• Academic progress review;
- Upcoming assignment review
- Review of returned grades
- Management of due dates and possible conflicts with athletic schedule
- Encouraging meetings with professors
• Targeted academic assistance
- Identify areas requiring additional support, including tutoring and faculty support
• Holistic support
- Address any personal concerns such as health, family concerns and roommate issues, etc.
- Coordinate with Administrative Deans, Office of Student Disability Services, Counseling center, Shaw Wellness and other campus resources
