Raiders Ride Run Game, Defense to beat Fordham, 24-14

Colgate finishes with 275 rushing yards in road victory



BRONX, N.Y. – Junior running back Danny Shaban rushed for a career-high 214 yards and two touchdowns to propel Colgate past Fordham, 24-14, in Friday night's season opener at Moglia Stadium.

Shaban carried the load 28 times, capping his night with a game-clinching 29-yard touchdown run with 1:53 remaining in regulation.

  • Q1 (10:52) | Colgate opened the scoring on its first drive of the season, marching 80 yards in 11 plays before Shaban punched it in from one yard out (7-0, Colgate).
  • Q2 (1:12) | Following a goal-line stand by the defense, Jake Stearney orchestrated a 16-play, 98-yard drive and scored on an eight-yard scramble (14-0, Colgate).
  • Q3 (3:45) | Fordham erased the deficit with 14 unanswered points, leveraging a short-field turnover and a pick-six (14-14, Tied).
  • Q4 (7:23) | After Tyler Fontenot pinned Fordham at its own 5-yard line to flip field position, Luke Vogeler drilled a go-ahead 37-yard field goal (17-14, Colgate).
  • Q4 (1:53) | Following a defensive stop, Shaban put the game out of reach with a 29-yard touchdown strike (24-14, Colgate).
Game Notes
  • Colgate outgained Fordham 434-189 in total offense, including 275 rushing yards.
  • Stearney went 19-for-29 for 159 yards.
  • Matt Fogler and Winston Moore led the receiving corps with four catches apiece, combining for 78 yards.
  • Shaban became Colgate's first 200-yard rusher since Gavin McCarney (288) and Jordan McCord (203) combined for 491 in a 65-41 shootout win over Lafayette (Nov. 3, 2012).
  • Christian Magliacano anchored the defense with a team-high eight tackles, while Paul-Marie Dogui added six stops and a tackle for loss.
  • Colgate has now won back-to-back games against Fordham for the first time since the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The Raiders beat the Rams 44-21 last September in Hamilton.
  • This was also Colgate's first win over Fordham in the Bronx since 2018 (41-0). 
  • Colgate starts Patriot League play 1-0 and wins its first road game of the season for the first time since 2018. The Raiders beat New Hampshire 10-3 in their road opener that year.
