HAMILTON – The field hockey team opened its season with a statement 5-0 win over New Haven on Tyler's Field. The win featured four goal scorers and head coach Gareth Terrett's first win at the helm for Colgate.
The match featured four goal scorers, Ava Poliafico netting two, six Raiders totaling an assist, 18 shots on goal, and 16 points earned throughout the team.
MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
- Colgate scored two quick goals to start the game. The first goal came in the second minute of play with Caroline Rotteveel finding the back of the net off Poliafico's assist.
- Poliafico, in turn, scored the second goal of the game just under the fourth minute, assisted by Aiden Cronk.
- Embarking on the second quarter of play, Minah Cho scored off a breakaway, assisted by Morgan Willis.
- Defense was a staple as the Raiders held the Chargers to one shot in the third quarter, saved by Kennedy Glinn.
- Poliafico tallied her second goal of the game in the 51st minute from Cho and Rotteveel. It was the first time she has scored multiple goals in a game.
- First-year Emma Shushansky scored in her debut in the 55th minute with a simple redirect from Lauren Widdowson.
NOTES
- The last time the Raiders scored five goals in their season opener was in 2010, with a 5-0 victory over Robert Morris.
- The last time the field hockey program scored five goals in a game was in 2025 against Lock Haven in a 5-3 win.
- Rotteveel, Shushansky and Poliafico all scored their first collegiate goal.
- Cho scored her second career goal while tallying her first assist.
- All first-years saw action in their first collegiate match. Cronk and Macy Rehak garnered their first career starts.
