Colgate Drops Game One Against Cornell

Petford nets third straight two-goal game

ITHACA, N.Y. - After battling back from two goals behind, the Raiders fell 3-2 to Cornell in overtime in game one of the ECAC Quarterfinals at Lynah Rink on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cornell managed to break through at 8:51 of the first with a goal from Georgia Schiff, assisted by Delaney Fleming and Piper Grober. Colgate continued to challenge the Big Red's defense, maintaining pressure with shots from Sara Stewart and Alexia Aubin, but the period concluded with Colgate trailing 1-0.

Colgate faced early pressure in the second period, as the Big Red initiated two power plays. Despite multiple shots from Cornell, Davis made crucial saves to keep the score unchanged during these penalties. Midway through the period, the Big Red managed to break through with a goal from Fleming, assisted by Abby Thibodeau and Sarah MacEachern, extending its lead. Colgate responded with increased offensive attempts, including shots from Biederman and Emma Pais, but was unable to capitalize before the period ended. The period closed with Colgate trailing 2-0.

Colgate initiated a significant momentum shift early in the third period. With a power play opportunity, Petford capitalized by scoring a goal at 17:47, assisted by Biederman and Casey Borgiel, cutting the deficit to one.

Colgate continued to apply pressure, and with an extra attacker on the ice, Petford found the net again at 2:03, assisted by Pais and Biederman. This goal tied the game at 2-2, and Colgate maintained the momentum through the period's conclusion. The period ended with the score tied.

In the overtime period, Colgate showcased a strong defensive effort with Davis making crucial saves against multiple Cornell attempts. Biederman generated offensive pressure with two consecutive shots that were saved by the Big Red's goaltender, Annelies Bergmann. Cornell capitalized on a sudden-death opportunity at 9:42 with an unassisted goal by Avi Adam. The game concluded with Colgate narrowly falling to the Big Red, 3-2, in overtime.

  • Petford logged her third consecutive two-goal game and is now equal with Emma Pais and Elyssa Biederman for the team-high 18 goals.
  • Biederman posted her fifth multi-assist game of the season as she dished out both assists for Petford.
  • Brooke Davis made 36 saves between the pipes for Colgate, including seven in the sudden-death frame.
