BOSTON – Colgate faced Boston University on national television Monday night coming off of a strong performance against Navy, but a record-tying showing from behind the arc by the Terriers condemned Colgate to its second straight Patriot League loss, 85-58.
In a quiet day for Colgate, four triples from Kyle Carlesimo and 13 points from Ben Tweedy led the way, with Andrew Alekseyenko adding nine rebounds and Jalen Cox reaching double figures. Alekseyenko and Josh Ahayere finished with nine points apiece.
COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS
"Joe Jones has done an incredible job as the head coach at Boston University. They've had a lot of good teams, but this is maybe the best job he's done as a coach. Despite injuries and a depleted roster, they've competed every night and are playing really well at this point in the season. I needed to prepare our group better, though I'm not sure it would've changed much tonight—that's a credit to how Boston University played. We haven't been beaten the way we were tonight, but nobody feels sorry for us. I hope we get some time to recover and respond the way I know this group can."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate had lost four Patriot League games by a combined 10 points, but Boston University built a double-digit lead in the first three minutes and kept stretching the margin after that. The Terriers connected on six of their first seven attempts from behind the arc to build a 19-9 lead.
From there, the teams would begin trading baskets, but the Raider deficit would increase to 14 with less than seven minutes remaining in the opening half, which was marked by BU's remarkable 9-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc.
After going down 17 following the last media timeout, Colgate began to claw its way back into the matchup, cutting the lead to 11 with strong defense and two jumpers from Cox.
The Raiders trailed 36-23 at the half, needing a comeback in the last 20 minutes to avoid their first losing streak of the Patriot League season.
Boston University continued its shooting showcase in the second half, extending the lead over the Raiders to 19 with 12 minutes left in the game despite two more trifectas from Tweedy.
Carlesimo and Tweedy did their best to hold serve, each contributing double figures for Colgate, but it wouldn't be enough. For the rest of Monday's matchup, BU refused to slow down, tying a program record with 18 made 3-pointers and handing the Raiders an 85-58 loss.
More than half of Boston University's field goal attempts came from behind the arc, where the Terriers shot 60 percent (18-of-30), led by Azmar Abdullah who tied the NCAA Division I single-game record this season by going 8-for-8 from the perimeter.
