BALTIMORE – Colgate slugged four home runs in an 8-3 win over Manhattan before succumbing to a late rally from UMBC, 8-4, in a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon.
Quinn Livesay paced Colgate's offense, going 5-for-7 on the day with two home runs, a double, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Jillian Herbst racked up four RBIs, while going 4-for-7 at the plate with a home run. Alexis Romero also homered and drove in three runs on the day.
Game 1 | Colgate 8, Manhattan 3
- Manhattan struck first with two runs in the top of the first, but the Raiders countered with eight unanswered runs on the strength of four homers to blow the game open.
- Livesay started the onslaught with a solo shot in the home half of the first to cut the deficit in half. Herbst tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single up the middle.
- Colgate's bats came alive in the third, with three home runs in the frame from Livesay, Romero, and Herbst. Romero's blast was a three-run shot that expanded the lead to 8-2.
- Mikala Ham settled in after the two-run first inning. She went on to toss six scoreless innings and secured her second win of the season, yielding five hits and three runs with seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings to improve to 2-2 on the campaign.
Game 2 | UMBC 8, Colgate 4
- Livesay's hot hitting continued, cranking an RBI double down the right field line to score Analisa Raffaelli in the top of the first. Lily Haluska scored Livesay with a double to center field, and then Amanda DeSantis's RBI single stretched the lead to 3-0 through one inning.
- UMBC battled back with a pair of four-run frames. Emily Riggs had the big blow, a three-run homer to give UMBC a 4-3 lead in the third inning.
- Herbst's strong day carried over to the nightcap when she drilled a game-tying single to center field, scoring Mia Cascio to draw even 4-4 through four innings.
- The Retrievers took advantage of miscues to finish off the scoring in the fifth, plating four runs on three hits. Three of those runs came with two outs, including an RBI single up the middle from Mikayla Bryant to help UMBC open an 8-4 lead.
- Colgate was unable to scratch another run across and came up short in the final game of Friday's doubleheader, 8-4.
