Raiders Make History in Win Over Crusaders

For the first time in program history, Colgate has a flawless 10–0 conference record.

WORCESTER, Mass. — For the first time in program history, the Colgate Raiders have opened Patriot League play with an unblemished 10–0 start. Colgate pushed the match to five sets after being down 2–1 following the third set to win 3–2 over Holy Cross.

Since conference teams began facing each other twice per season in 1999 — 26 years ago — no Colgate team had reached that mark. Prior to tonight's win, the Raiders' best Patriot League start was 9–0, achieved in both 2019 and 2023.

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS
"We found a way to win on the road.  Our overall defensive effort improved throughout the match which resulted in a more cohesive group.  Hats off to Holy Cross as they played some great defense.  We will rest up and get ready for another tough road match tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 | Holy Cross 25, Colgate 21
The match began with the Crusaders earning the first point and an early 2–0 lead. The Raiders kept the set competitive, with Tiana Owens leading the response through multiple kills to give Colgate their first lead of the set, 8–7. Despite this, Holy Cross maintained momentum, as the Crusaders capitalized on a Raider attacking error and three kills to push the score in favor of Holy Cross, 14–10. Colgate managed a late surge with a kill from Jordyn Moore and three consecutive Raider blocks, closing the gap to 22–20. However, a kill from the Crusaders sealed a 25–21 victory for Holy Cross in the opening set.

Set 2 | Colgate 25, Holy Cross 15
Colgate built momentum early in the second set with a kill from Maddie Rudolph. Colgate started to get into their rhythm, winning stretches of points. Two kills from Rudolph, blocks from Frances Torres and Lal Akin, and Crusader attacking errors gave the Raiders a 13–8 advantage. Milan Bayless helped extend the lead to 16–9 with two kills. Holy Cross was too far in a deficit as Colgate concluded the set with two three-point runs, and Torres delivered the final kill, sealing a 25–15 victory for Colgate and leveling the match, 1–1.

Set 3 | Holy Cross 25, Colgate 2
In the third set, Colgate initially took a 2–0 lead with a kill by Torres and a block by Rudolph. Holy Cross responded with a series of effective plays to take a 3–2 lead. As the set progressed, Bayless scored four critical kills, helping the Raiders regain momentum and establish a 15–11 advantage. However, Holy Cross mounted a comeback, recording key kills to regain the lead at 16–15. Both teams traded points, keeping the game within reach, but Holy Cross delivered two final kills to wrap up the set 25–22 and take a 2–1 advantage.

Set 4 | Colgate 25, Holy Cross 15
The set began with the Crusaders striking first, but the Raiders quickly responded with a series of points, including a service ace by Rudolph at 6–2. Two additional kills from Bayless helped boost the Raiders to a 10–6 advantage. Colgate showed its versatility in a four-point scoring run that included a kill, block, Crusader attacking error, and service ace to overpower Holy Cross, 14–7. Colgate closed out set four, earning six points to Holy Cross's three. Tiana Owens delivered the decisive point, assisted by Ava Schabes, to level the score at 2–2 and capture a 25-15 victory.
