Raiders Drop Road Match to Black Knights

Colgate fell to Army to collect first conference loss

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Colgate dropped the last three of five sets to Army, falling in a five-set battle on Saturday at Gillis Field House. This match marked Colgate's first conference loss of the season and their seventh straight match loss at Army.

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS
"This one hurts for sure. Both teams played some really good volleyball at different stretches of time. We just couldn't make the plays when we needed to.

"We have a lot of volleyball left in the season. There are obvious areas where we are doing some really good things and some obvious areas where we need to be better. It's time to get back to work on Monday."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 | Colgate 25, Army 19
The opening set between Colgate and Army featured an early back-and-forth exchange, with neither team able to build a significant lead. Maddie Rudolph contributed key kills, keeping the score close at 7–7. The Raiders pulled ahead as Army's service errors and attack errors increased, giving them a 14–12 advantage. Colgate gained a 19–14 edge, capitalizing on four consecutive Army attacking errors. The set concluded with the Raiders securing a 25–19 victory on two Raider blocks. Lal Akin contributed to both points, while Frances Torres and Milan Bayless each recorded one.

Set 2 | Colgate 25, Army 22
Army began the second set with a 3–0 lead, including a service ace. Colgate responded with a block from Jordyn Moore and Maddie Rudolph, along with two additional points, to tie the score at 3–3. Colgate, down 11–6, rallied to earn five unanswered points to level the score. Rudolph helped spark the fire, recording 2.5 points on two kills and a block assist. The two teams traded points until Colgate earned three straight points off Army's attack errors, to push their lead to 20–18. Despite a late push from Army, the Raiders clinched the set 25–22, with Bayless sealing it, assisted by Ava Schabes, who totaled a career-high of 32 assists.

Set 3 | Army 25, Colgate 23
The Raiders initially grabbed the momentum with a series of kills from Bayless and Rudolph, taking an early 4–1 lead. Army responded with a series of impactful plays to level the score at 6–6. As the set progressed, Army found a burst of energy, pulling ahead 18–13. Undeterred by the deficit, Colgate matched Army's intensity and regained the lead, 22–21. In a tense finish, Army secured the set, 25–23.

Set 4 | Army 25, Colgate 21
Colgate started set four on top with a solo block from Moore and Army attacking error to take a 2–0 lead. The two teams battled for every point, with six lead changes and no clear indication of who was dominating the set. Army struck first with a string of five points to take a 16–12 advantage. The Raiders halted their offense, but the Black Knights tacked on two more points to extend their 18–13 lead. Army attacked as they were two points away from claiming set four but Colgate surged with four points, all from kills, to close the gap at 23–20. Despite the team's valiant efforts, Colgate fell short, 25–21, as Army charged for set five.

Set 5 | Army 15, Colgate 11
In a tense fifth set, Army surged to an early 6–1 lead. The Raiders attempted a comeback with a service ace from Owens and a kill by Akin, closing the gap to 12–9. However, the Black Knights' kill helped Army maintain their edge. Army sealed a 15–11 victory on a kill and block to finish 3–2.
