Raiders' Comeback Falls Short at PSU

Andrew Takacs makes a career-high 39 saves, but Colgate falls 3-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Colgate pulled within one twice but could not complete the comeback, falling 3-2 at Penn State Tuesday evening.

COACH HARDER'S COMMENTS
"We are a good team who played an equally good team and came up short. We now have a chance to make things right tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daniel Panetta put the Raiders within one at 3-2 with eight and a half minutes remaining in the third. Reid Irwin collected a loose puck following a shot from Jake Schneider and skated around before passing to Panetta for a one-timer he ripped from just past the blueline that deflected off the goalie's pads and went in.
  • Charlie Cerrato gave Penn State a 3-1 lead when he got free on a breakaway and scored at the 5:58 mark of the second.
  • Alex DiPaolo had cut the PSU lead in half at 2-1, scoring with 1:54 remaining in the first. Irwin passed to Brett Chorske, who fired a shot that hit off a defender's skate, but it landed perfectly to DiPaolo, who finished it into an open goal.
  • The Nittany Lions' first tally came from Aiden Fink just under five minutes into the opening period. Penn State took a 2-0 lead with a power play goal from Matt DiMarsico at about the halfway mark of the first.
  • Colgate tried to draw even late in the game pulling its goalie with 1:33 to play and firing a few shots that could not get on target.
  • Despite going down a man with 3:51 left in the third, the Raiders had two good shorthanded opportunities. Ben Raymond ripped a shot just wide, and Schneider got denied on a breakaway after a save by the goalie.
  • Andrew Takacs stopped 11 shots in the third, allowing no goals. He also made 15 saves in the first.
  • The Raiders earned their first power play of the game with 7:38 left in the first but could not capitalize. Eight minutes into the second, Colgate had another man-up chance that was also unsuccessful.
GAME NOTES
  • Takacs recorded a career-high 39 saves in goal.
  • Panetta found the back of the net for the second straight game.
  • DiPaolo scored for the second time in three contests.
  •  Irwin recorded his second two-assist performance this season.
