Colgate Falls in Season Opener

Two Raiders score first career goals in 4-2 defeat at UConn

STORRS, Conn.— First-year Ryan Spinale and sophomore Antonio Fernandez scored their first career goals, but Colgate fell 4-2 at UConn in its season opener Friday evening.

"We had a lot of bright spots and some really good efforts tonight. It will be good to get some new guys in the lineup tomorrow to see how they can help us win. Looking forward to a great game Saturday night," said head coach Mike Harder.

The Huskies took a 1-0 advantage seven minutes into the game. Tabor Heaslip took a shot that got saved then Nick Percival fired one that also got stopped, but he followed his rebound and tapped it into the net.

Spinale scored his first career goal with 3:27 remaining in the first to knot the score at 1-1. Bobby Metz played the puck to Michael Neumeier, who skated up the ice and found his classmate. Spinale ripped a wrister from just past the blue line that beat the goaltender glove side. The helper marked Neumeier's first collegiate point.

Connecticut added two more in the second period to push its lead to two. Oliver Flynn snapped a shot from the left faceoff circle that snuck in to make it 2-1 at the 12:55 mark. Five minutes later, Ethan Gardula tipped in a shot by Kai Janviriya on a power play. The Huskies made it 4-1 just under two minutes into the final period with a tally from Jake Richard.

Fernandez cut the deficit to two after netting his first career goal with 3:15 remaining in the game. The sophomore found a loose puck and took a shot from almost behind the goal that hit off the goalie's back and crossed the line.

The Raiders had a power play opportunity with 12:12 left in the third and pulled the goalie to go up two players. Simon Labelle and Alex DiPaolo had shots that they put off target.

Colgate also had two power plays in the middle frame. The first came with 17:13 remaining, during which the Raiders fired four shots, including a couple that went wide off the sticks of Tommy Bergsland and Fernandez. Colgate's second chance came with 52 seconds left in the second, spilling over to the third. DiPaolo had the Raiders' best look following the intermission, ripping a shot that got saved.

Later in the third, Colgate had a flurry of chances but could not capitalize. Dominic Foglia had a shot saved, and Max Nagel put one wide. Brett Chorske then had back-to-back looks, ringing his first shot off the pipe before having his second saved.

Andrew Takacs made a career-high 34 saves in net. The junior stopped 25 shots combined in the first two periods, with 12 saves in the first and 13 in the second.
