Panetta Nets OT Winner

Junior scores second goal of game to lift Colgate past Sacred Heart, 6-5

HAMILTON — Daniel Panetta scored the overtime game-winner in a 6-5 victory against Sacred Heart Friday at the Class of 1965 Arena.

Panetta lit the lamp for the second time in the game with 33 seconds left in the extra period. Simon Labelle passed to Tommy Bergsland, who fed a pass down to Panetta. The junior snuck a shot past the goalie. It marks the second overtime game-winning goal of Panetta's career.

"Obviously it was great to get the win. It was an awesome setup from my line mates, Bergsland and Labelle, as they made a great play hitting me down low, and I got lucky sneaking it by the goalie," Panetta said.

Bergsland led Colgate with four points, tallying a career-high four assists.

Sacred Heart had scored back-to-back goals to knot the score up. Cole Galata made it 5-5 just under eight minutes into the third after Max Dorrington pulled the Pioneers within one with 2:04 left in the second.

The Raiders previously went up two after scoring two straight at the end of the second. Panetta notched his first of the contest with 11 minutes left, making it 4-3. Labelle played the puck to Brett Chorske, who was standing on the goal line. Chorske then hit a pass to Panetta as he was skating toward goal, and the he ripped a one-timer home.

Five and a half minutes late, Michael Neumeier pushed the lead to 5-3 with his first career goal. The first-year rocketed one from the blue line after Chorske handed the puck off to Bergsland, who played a pass to Neumeier.

SHU began the middle frame scoring three unanswered to even the score at 3-3. Felix Trudeau netted back-to-back goals in the opening 2:16, and Aiden VanRooyan knotted the score two minutes later.

Colgate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Jake Schneider got the home side on the board eight and a half minutes into the period with his first goal of the season. Antonio Fernandez passed to Bergsland, who sauced the puck to the sophomore, and he sent home a one-timer.

Alex DiPaolo made it 2-0 Raiders. Simone Dadiè passed to Nic Belpedio, and the senior fired one toward the goal that his classmate tipped in.

Dadiè found the back of the net for the second straight game with 22 seconds left in the opening period, pushing the lead to 3-0. Bergsland hit the puck to Niko Rexine, and he played it across to Dadiè for a shot he finished from right in front.

Colgate had some other chances early on, including Ben Raymond ripping a shot that dinged off the post with 12 and a half minutes left in the first. The Raiders earned their first power play less than two minutes into the game and managed to fire two shots but could not put one in the net.
