ITHACA, N.Y. — Colgate scored three times in the fourth quarter to spoil Cornell's homecoming with a 35-25 road victory at Schoellkopf Field Saturday.
The Raiders played a strong game on both sides of the ball, scoring five touchdowns and forcing two fumbles.
Sophomore quarterback
Zach Osborne passed for two touchdowns and rushed for his first career TD in the victory.
"Huge team win. All phases had their ups and downs, but all phases battled through and made an impact on the game. We had our fair share of adversity and still had some self-inflicted penalties and plays that in weeks past we didn't really bounce back from, but today the guys did," said Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach
Stan Dakosty.
"We talked this week that an opportunity was given to us this Saturday to change a narrative and release any negative thoughts or feelings they've been going through and just got out and play Colgate football. We've got a great group of guys, they're a really tight group," he added.
"They fight and battle and do everything we ask for them. I'm just happy for them and proud of them. We talked about being 1-0 this week and we accomplished that and now it's the same mindset going forward."
Colgate secured the win with 1:37 remaining in the fourth when
Brock Winsett sacked the Big Red's quarterback in the end zone, forcing him to cough up the ball.
Andrew Taddeo recovered it to get the six points.
Jacob Jaworski nailed the point after to seal the deal, making it 35-25 Raiders.
Cornell had cut it to a three-point game at 28-25 with 2:29 remaining after scoring and capitalizing on a two-point conversion.
The second Colgate touchdown of the fourth came after another outstanding defensive effort.
Drew Frankel forced a Big Red fumble at the Cornell 19-yard line that got recovered by Winsett. The Raiders' offense took the field, and Osborne ran for five yards followed by a 12-yard carry by
Chris Gee. That set up a one-yard rush into the end zone for
Brendan Cassamajor, putting the scoreboard at 28-17.
Osborne put Colgate ahead for the first time in the game with 12:35 left in the fourth, following a 17-play drive that spanned over seven minutes. The sophomore ran 10 yards up the middle, diving into the end zone to put his team up 21-17.
The third quarter saw neither side get anything on the scoreboard, with both defenses holding tight.
Cornell drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired in the second to take a 17-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Colgate had previously knotted the score up at 14-14 with just over two minutes remaining. The drive began with a short rush by
Jaedon Henry. Osborne then connected a 29-yard pass to
Jake Ryan, who made a beautiful one-handed catch on the play.
Osborne kept the momentum going with a 13-yard run, then a short pass to
Winston Moore, who took it 34 yards to the Cornell 10-yard line. A couple of plays later, Osborne made an eight-yard pass to
William Parker for the touchdown.
Both teams got a tally in the first quarter, with the Big Red striking first following a Colgate fumble.
The Raiders answered back with 6:09 remaining. The drive began with Gee rushing for 34 yards. Two plays later, Osborne threw to
Treyvhon Saunders for a 20-yard touchdown, making it 7-7.
