Colgate Downs St. Lawrence in Exhibition Contest

Women’s hockey picks up 4-1 win in first game back on the ice

HAMILTON – The Colgate women's hockey team cruised to a 4-1 exhibition victory against the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday afternoon in the squad's first and only exhibition contest. The win saw nine different Raiders register at least one point, with fifth-year captains Danielle Serdachny and Ally Simpson logging two assists apiece.

Colgate opened the attack early, recording four of the first five shots in the opening period. But the Saints answered swiftly with six straight shots that swung momentum back in their favor before fifth-year Raider forward Kaitlyn O'Donohoe put Colgate on the board four minutes into the first period.

St. Lawrence would go on to outshoot the Raiders in the rest of the first, putting up 28 shots to Colgate's 18. Junior goalkeeper Hannah Murphy played well in net, however, stopping 10 first-period shot attempts from the Saints. She ended the day with 12 saves and allowed one goal.

In the second period, Colgate struck again within the first five minutes of play when sophomore forward Tessa Holk found the back of the net off the assist from sophomore Sara Stewart and first-year Kaia Malachino. The Raiders proceeded to pull away, outshooting the Saints twelve to nine in the next 10 minutes, capped by a goal from junior forward Neena Brick that put Colgate up 3-1 entering the final period.

After Colgate's third goal in the first five minutes of a period, this time in the third from first-year Emma Pais on a St. Lawrence power play, the Raiders could only muster three shots on goal for the rest of the game. Senior goaltender Kayle Osborne's 11 saves highlighted the rest of the contest that saw 24 shots, 11 on goal, from the home team.

After the exhibition win, Colgate now shifts its focus to the season opener next Friday, Sept. 29, when the number four-ranked Raiders host the Ohio State Buckeyes, ranked second in USCHO's national poll. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
