HAMILTON – A late second quarter touchdown by Penn broke a 6-6 tie and the Quakers never looked back in a 20-6 victory over Colgate at sun-splashed Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium.
"We have to give Penn credit," said Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach
Stan Dakosty. "They have a really good team and they are well coached. They capitalized on our mistakes which was a huge credit to them. We're still hurting ourselves with penalties and different things that good teams will make you pay for like Penn did today. We have to get better. We have a long ways to go. I have to do a better job and it starts with me. We have to figure out how to get this thing righted. It's a long season so we've gotta keep going."Â
Penn's score capped the longest drive for either team on the day with a 12 play, 75-yard effort finished by a Jared Richardson 6-yard reception from Aidan Sayin. The score came with just 1:36 left in the half.
The teams traded field goals in both the first and second quarters. Penn opened the scoring with a 42-yarder on its first possession going 24 yards in seven plays prior to the successful boot by Graham Gotleib at the 10:27 mark.
It took the Raiders less than four minutes to respond with a 12 play, 68-yard drive that stalled on the Quaker 8.
Jacob Jaworski drilled a 25-yard field goal for the Raiders' first home score of the season.
Colgate was driving at the end of the first quarter, but after moving 38 yards in eight plays, Jaden Key picked off a
Michael Brescia pass at the Penn 16 and returned the ball 24 yards to the Penn 40. As the quarter flipped, Penn was again on the move driving to the Colgate 8 before
Asauni Allen broke up a third down throw forcing a 25-yard Gotleib field goal with 13:40 left in the half.
After an exchange of punts on the next two possessions Colgate took over on its own 40 and drove to the Penn 14 where on third and eight Brescia's pass to
Treyvhon Saunders covered six yards leading to Jaworski's second 25-yard three-pointer. The big play on the drive was a 23-yard run by
Jaedon Henry to the Quaker 28.
Penn added a score in its first possession after the second half kickoff following a 44-yard return by Isaac Shabay. Starting from the Colgate 41, the Quakers covered the distance with a 9-yard pass, a 5-yard run, and an offsides penalty by the Colgate defense leading to a 22-yard scoring strike from Sayin to Marcus McDaniel.
Following a three and out Raider possession, Penn again drove deep into Colgate territory with a second and goal at the Raider 10. A diving interception in the end zone by
Arthur Hamlin snuffed out the drive. Colgate was not able to capitalize on the pick and neither team threatened to score the rest of the way.
Saunders led the Raiders with seven receptions for 64 yards while
Winston Moore snared four balls for 71 yards including a game-high 44-yard catch. Henry was Colgate's leading rusher with 48 yards on 11 totes.
