HAMILTON — Colton Young scored a late third-period goal to pull the Raiders within one, but Colgate could not complete a rally, falling 3-1 to Union Friday at the Class of 1965 Arena.
Young scored with 4:01 remaining in the game to make the score 2-1.
Simon Labelle passed the puck to
Alex Young, who dished it to his brother for a shot he tapped into the goal from in front of the net.
Union then added an empty-net goal with just over a minute remaining to seal the victory.
The Dutchmen doubled their lead with less than a second remaining in the second. Owen Faris won a face-off draw in Colgate's offensive zone with 2.8 seconds remaining. Nick Young collected the puck and sent a shot the length of the ice into an empty net to make it 2-0.
The Raiders fired just six shots in the second and could not get one in the back of the net. Colgate's defense also held Union to just three shots, and their penalty kill unit also held off one Dutchmen power play.
Liam Robertson scored the game's first goal, putting Union ahead 1-0 with six minutes remaining in the first. Robertson played a pass off the boards to himself before dishing the puck to Tyler Watkins, who passed back to Robertson for a shot he tapped in from close range.
Colgate was awarded two power plays in the opening period, neither of which it could convert on. The first came 30 seconds into the game after Union got called for goalie interference. The other came at the 6:33 mark on a hooking call.
The Raiders finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots after the first 20 minutes and outshot the Dutchmen 29 to 13 total in the game.
Carter Gylander finished with 10 stops in net for Colgate.

Head Coach Don Vaughan
"That's a tough loss. Union played a good road game, and I thought their goalie was outstanding tonight. Obviously, the elephant in the room is their second goal, where I pulled the goalie for the extra attacker with 2.8 seconds left in the period. I have done that many times in my career, and that is the first time I have ever seen that. That's on me. We have an opportunity to rebound tomorrow night. It's time to reset and be ready."
