Mitton's OT Winner Lifts Raiders Past Saints

Colgate Defeats St. Lawrence 3-2 in Overtime

HAMILTON — Ross Mitton scored the overtime game-winner with 12 seconds remaining to lift Colgate past St. Lawrence 3-2 Friday at the Class of 1965 Arena.

The victory gave the Raiders sole possession of fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings after Colgate and SLU came into the game tied with 30 points each.

Mitton scored on a shot from close up in front of the goal to give Colgate the victory. Alex Yong passed the puck to the junior before dishing it off to Nick Anderson. The defenseman played the puck back to Mitton for a shot he put over an outstretched St. Lawrence goalie.

The game went into overtime after the Saints tied it up with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Max Dorrington put one in the back of the net off assists from Philippe Chapleau and Luc Salem to even the score at 2-2.

Arnaud Vachon put the Raiders ahead 2-1 with 12:48 left in the third. Ethan Manderville hit a pass behind the net that slid along the boards into the left corner. Ryan McGuire tapped the puck to Vachon for a shot that slid under the goalie and into the net. It was the senior's second goal of the season.

The Raiders tied the game up at 1-1 with 16:02 remaining in the second. Colgate was on a five-minute power play after the Saints got called for a cross-checking major. Alex DiPaolo fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that deflected off a St. Lawrence player and went into the net for the sophomore's ninth goal of the season. Simon Labelle and Reid Irwin picked up assists on the play.

Colgate killed off two Saints' power plays in the middle frame to prevent the visitors from pulling back ahead in the period.

SLU got on the board first with just over six minutes remaining in the first. Cameron Buhl passed to Greg Lapointe, who fired a shot that got saved, but Justin Paul found the back of the net off the rebound.

Colgate had three power play chances in the first. The Raiders could not convert on any of them despite having several scoring chances. Colgate outshot the Saints 12-2 in the opening 20 minutes.

Carter Gylander finished with 20 saves in net which included 10 stops in the third period.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"We did a lot of good things tonight. We had a number of great scoring chances. I thought their goalie played very well. In the end, we found a way to get the extra point. It's a grind, and there are no easy games. We will hit the reset button and get ready for Clarkson."

UP NEXT
Colgate welcomes Clarkson to the Class of 1965 Arena Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest. The Raiders will celebrate their six seniors prior to the game.
