HAMILTON — The No. 3 Raiders defeated No. 6/7 Yale 4-0 in a top-10 battle at the Class of 1965 Arena Saturday afternoon.
Goaltender
Kayle Osborne logged her third shutout of the season with 23 saves and improved to a perfect 7-0 on the year. The victory also marked the eighth straight for Colgate and it now sits 9-1 overall, including a 4-0 mark in ECAC Hockey.
"That was a really strong effort tonight. It was a lot of fun to watch our team play that way and for three full periods. Overall, it was a strong weekend of play for us," said head coach
Greg Fargo.
"I thought we played well as a unit of five all night. We kept the puck moving, and we had some great looks both off the rush and from established offensive zone play. A lot of the play we liked about our game started from our collective efforts to get the puck back. I'm already looking forward to this week ahead and getting back to work with our team on Monday. We've got a great group, and it's a lot of fun being with them each day."
Colgate gained an early advantage when
Danielle Serdachny scored her sixth goal of the season with just over 14 minutes remaining. The fifth-year had an initial shot saved by the goalie, but she followed the rebound and buried one home to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Emma Pais and
Sydney Morrow picked up assists on the play.
In the second, the Raiders scored what they thought was their second goal of the game when Serdachny put in what would have been her second of the contest, but after video review the goal got overturned, and the game remained knotted up at 1-1.
Colgate did not let the overturned goal affect it. Less than two minutes later,
Kaia Malachino fired a quick shot directly off a faceoff win by
Sara Stewart that beat the goalie five-hole to make it 2-0.
The Raiders added two more insurance goals in the third.
Kristýna Kaltounková found the back of the net off a feed from
Dara Greig at the 15:53 mark. Colgate pushed its advantage to four after Serdachny scrapped a loose puck out of the corner and passed to Pais, who played it to
Elyssa Biederman for a one-timer in front of the goal.
In the first, the Raiders had numerous other chances to add on to their lead, holding a 15-8 advantage in shots. Colgate also had two power play opportunities it could not capitalize on. The Raiders finished with a 41-23 lead in shots.
Yale had a pair of power plays in the middle frame that the Raiders successfully killed off to prevent them from getting on the board.
