PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Colgate equalized during each of the first two periods but could not find an answer to Brown's go-ahead goal in the third, falling 3-2 to the Bears in its ECAC Hockey opener at Meehan Auditorium Friday evening.
"Hockey is a game of mistakes and we made a couple that elite teams should not make. We will fix it and get better," said head coach Mike Harder.
Brown went ahead 3-2 with 4:47 left in the final period thanks to a goal from Ryan St. Louis. Colgate pulled its goalie with just under two minutes to go, but had difficulty generating chances and could not put one in the back of the net.
Ross Mitton drew the Raiders even at 2-2 with a minute and a half remaining in the second. Goaltender
Carter Gylander picked up his third career assist after passing it to Mitton, who skated into the offensive zone, beat a couple of Bears, and fired a shot high glove side.
Brown had retaken the lead with a goal from Jackson Munro at the 17:33 mark to make it 2-1.
The Bears notched the game's first goal, with Tony Andreozzi scoring 12 minutes into the opening period.
Colgate responded when
Alex DiPaolo logged his first goal of the season with 1:29 remaining in the first. The junior stole the puck away from a Brown player and skated into the neutral zone before dishing a pass to
Brett Chorske, who got ahead and then played it back to DiPaolo for a shot he finished from in front of the goal.
The Raiders did not have a power play chance the entire game. Brown had one in the second and another in the third, both of which successfully got killed off. Colgate finished with a 36-28 advantage in shots after starting the game strong, holding a 19-9 lead after the first period.
Gylander stopped 25 shots in goal. He sustained heavy pressure from the Bears early in the third, making six saves in less than two minutes.
