HAMILTON — Colgate picked up two points in the league standings after tying No. 20 Harvard 2-2 but taking the shootout 2-0.
"Proud of our group tonight for finding a way to win. Nothing is ever easy in this great league so we need to be prepared for another battle tomorrow," said Head Coach Mike Harder.
The Raiders unveiled their 2023 ECAC Championship and NCAA Tournament banners before the game and honored former head coach Don Vaughan, presenting him with his championship ring.
Harvard tied the game up at 2-2 at the 11:47 mark of the third when Ben MacDonald snuck one in on a power play following a tripping call against Colgate.
The Raiders could not find a go-ahead goal in the remaining minutes of the third, despite outshooting Harvard 21-10 in the period. Neither side could then pull ahead in overtime.
Carter Gylander stopped both Harvard shots in the shootout, and
Ross Mitton and
Ben Raymond converted on their attempts to take it 2-0.
Alex DiPaolo gave the Raiders a 2-1 advantage with just over two minutes left in the second. The junior deflected a Crimson pass, which fell to
Simon Labelle, who took it the length of the ice before hitting a short pass back to DiPaolo for a shot he tapped into the back of the net.
In the first,
Jake Schneider got the Raiders on the board at the 12:18 mark of the period.
Tommy Bergsland tapped a loose puck to
Daniel Panetta, who took it up the ice along the boards before playing it up to Schneider. The first-year skated in, and ripped a shot past the goalie from the right faceoff circle.
The Crimson equalized just under five minutes later with a goal from Ryan Fine to knot the score at 1-1.
Harvard earned the game's first power play just over 14 minutes into the middle frame that Colgate successfully killed off.
Ryan McGuire had a shorthand chance with a two-on-one breakaway, but his shot got saved.
Gylander made 10 saves in the second period to keep the Crimson off the scoreboard during the middle 20 minutes. He stopped four shots in the extra period. The senior finished with 25 saves.
