HAMILTON — Senior
Kristýna Kaltounková's third career hat trick carried No. 3/3 Colgate to a 6-2 victory against No. 11/11 Penn State on Friday night. A total of seven Raiders tallied a point in the dominant home victory, with
Ally Simpson,
Danielle Serdachny and
Dara Greig also contributing multi-point performances.
"It was a good team win tonight," Assistant Coach Stefan Decosse said. "From our goalie out, we got contributions from everyone in all three zones, and our special teams had a real impact tonight. We're looking forward to competing again tomorrow afternoon."
The Nittany Lions came out roaring in the opening minutes, forcing goalkeeper Kayle Osborne to make two of her 25 saves within the first 90 seconds of play. The Raiders rebounded quickly, however, killing a Penn State power play before Kaltounková flicked in the first goal of the night off the feed from Serdachny.
Colgate then went on a power play of its own, pulling the goalie to earn a six-on-four advantage midway through the first period. Serdachny capitalized on the opportunity, slotting a top-shelf strike on Simpson's first of four assists.
Penn State clawed back with three minutes remaining in the first, cutting the lead in half going into the first break.
After the Nittany Lions opened the second stanza with four quick shots, the Raiders remained resilient and rattled off seven straight shots capped by Neena Brick's second goal of the season. Brick's tap-in from just outside the goalie crease was the lone score of an otherwise even period that saw the Raiders narrowly outshot the visitors, 21-16.
The third period was a different story, as Kaltounková put in her second of the night on another Colgate power play that extended the Raider's lead to three.
"We had some really good chemistry going on my line and on the power play, too," Kaltounková said. "Their goalie gave us some rebounds that we were able to put in the net but it was a great team effort. We always work really hard and it showed tonight."
The Nittany Lions refused to roll over, scoring their final goal of the evening four minutes into the final frame.
It was not enough to stop the surging Kaltounková, who completed the hat trick just over halfway through the third. Greig was credited with her second assist of the season on the goal, and she clinched the 22nd multi-point game of her Colgate career eight minutes later when she converted a behind-the-back pass from Elyssa Biederman to close the door on the Nittany Lions.
