STANFORD, Calif. – Though the score might not have been what the Raiders hoped when they made the trip to California, strong performances by the defense and first-year players hint at a positive outlook on the season for Colgate.
After starting the game with a 13-yard return, the Cardinal got on the board early with an 87-yard rushing touchdown. Colgate's defense was aggressive early, as a 31-yard fumbled punt by Stanford was recovered by
Owen Goss. Shortly after his first recovery, Goss recovered his second of the day.
The second quarter would start with Colgate getting on the board.
Asauni Allen got the first Raider touchdown of the 2022 season after a fumble recovery in the Stanford end zone. Allen's touchdown caused the first and only tie of the game. The Cardinal would quickly respond with a 27-yard touchdown taking their lead back by seven. Stanford's offense kept going, adding another touchdown to the scoreboard to lead the game 28-7 going into halftime.
The third quarter started with back-to-back interceptions for both teams, with Stanford getting picked off by
Jackson Price. Coming off of Price's interception,
Spencer Biscoe nailed his sole field goal of the night to cut Stanford's lead to 18 points. The third quarter would end with a 53-yard Stanford run that would lead to a one-yard touchdown run.
The final quarter of play opened with a one-yard Cardinal touchdown. Brescia was sacked for the second time of the game in the Raiders' first possession of the fourth quarter.
Harry Kirk entered the game for Colgate's next possession to relieve Brescia. Stanford scored a 48-yard touchdown with less than five minutes of the game left.
Zach Osborne and
Alex Rosso both took snaps during Colgate's final possession of the game.
NOTES
FROM THE SOURCE
Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach Stan Dakosty
"There is a lot to take away from the game tonight. There was a lot of fight from our guys, but also a lot of things we need to correct and clean up. We came out here to win a football game, so we're disappointed in the outcome. We can walk away from this with a lot to build off of.
"A lot of guys got reps in a big-time atmosphere tonight. That's why they came to Colgate, to play in big-time games, so that experience is invaluable. The big thing now is to get back and learn from this game and get our guys ready for next weekend at Maine."
