Raiders Tame Black Bears 21-18

Colgate Beats Maine for the First Time Since 1999

ORONO, Maine – Defense (and touchdowns) do indeed win games. A stellar showing of the defensive room carried the Raiders to a historic win.

Tyler Flick rallied the Raiders' defense, breaking his game-high 12 tackles and finishing the game with 15, including eight solo tackles. Arthur Hamlin also recorded a game-high seven tackles. Michael Slivka and Taitwoine Sanders recorded career-high tackles. Slivka laid out six and Sanders five.

Today's win marks Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach Stan Dakosty's first career non-conference win and the first time the Raiders have beat Maine since 1999.

Both offenses started the game quietly, with the quarterbacks getting sacked on each team's third possession. Coleman Coco got the sack for the Raiders on Maine's 28-yard line. The first quarter of play ended scoreless, thanks to the defense.

Colgate's defense kept their hot momentum to start the second quarter. The Raiders forced the Black Bears to punt quickly, after a tackle by Flick on Colgate's 41. The offense fed off the defense as Michael Brescia tossed a 13-yard dagger to Ryan Cekay. Brescia proving to be the complete quarterback, scored his first touchdown of the 2022 season after darting into the end zone. Colgate would hold Maine to zero points going into halftime.

The Black Bears' defense did not let up coming out of halftime. Maine caught Brescia off-guard with a sack on Colgate's first possession of the third quarter. Brescia did not let Maine get in his head, tossing the ball to Garrett Oakey, who threw a 34-yard bomb to freshman Brady Hutchison.

Colgate capitalized on Oakey's throw, with Brescia scoring his second rushing touchdown of the day. The Black Bears finally got on the board with a field goal to end the third quarter.

The final quarter of regulation opened with a penalty on Colgate's defense. The penalty resulted in a rushing touchdown for Maine, cutting Colgate's lead to four points. Colgate did not let Maine deter them, as Brescia put on the jets to score a 68-yard rushing touchdown, breaking his game-high two rushing touchdowns and career-long run.

Spencer Biscoe nailed his third extra point of the day to bring the Raiders' lead to 11 points. Biscoe went 3-3 on the day.

Maine would not go down quietly, scoring another touchdown and succeeding in a two-point conversion. The Black Bears trailed by only three points with a little over four minutes in regulation, but the Raiders prevailed to salvage the lead and win.

Notes
  • Brescia leads the Raiders in rushing yards with 130.
  • Flick has 23 tackles on the season.
  • Cole Kozlowski made his Colgate debut.
  • 4-of-5 touchdowns scored in the game were by the quarterbacks.
