Colgate Comes From Behind to Defeat Princeton

Late goals by Josh McKechney and Tommy Bergsland propel the Raiders to victory

PRINCETON, N.J. –  Once again Colgate provided some third period excitement.

This time, the Raiders (14-15-4, 9-8-4 ECAC Hockey) scored a pair of goals with less than seven minutes left in the game to overtake Princeton (8-17-2, 7-12-1 ECAC Hockey) and earned a 4-3 victory on Friday night inside Hobey Baker Rink.

Colgate has now only lost one game in the last nine outings and is still in the hunt for a opening-round bye in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament.

Princeton dropped a fourth straight decision.

Josh McKechney provided the game-winning goal at the 14:57 mark of the third period. His 13th goal of the season broke the 3-3 tie and gave Colgate its first lead of the night. Alex Young and Alex DiPaolo assisted on the goal.

Just a minute and half prior, the Raiders tied the score when Tommy Bergsland put a slap shot from the right side into the back of the net. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by Alex Young and Colton Young.

Princeton started the scoring with a power-play goal from Jack Cronin halfway through the first period.

Colgate tied it up four minutes into the second period when Arnaud Vachon netted his fifth goal of the season. Tommy Bergsland and Ethan Manderville assisted on the goal.

The Tigers regained the lead with 4:07 remaining in the second period with a goal by Mike Kennedy.

The Raiders jumped right back into a tie with a power play goal from Griffin Lunn. Lunn scored his 10th goal of the season with 45.0 seconds left in the second period. Manderville picked up his second assist of the game, while Elliott McDermott also garnered an assist on the equalizer.

Princeton retook the lead 2:23 into the third period on a short handed goal off the stick of Spencer Kersten.

Mitch Benson made 35 saves in net for the Raiders, including a pair of big glove saves in the waning minutes of the game. He improved to 6-4-3 this season.

Princeton put 38 shots on goal, while Colgate had 34 shots on net. The Raiders won 37 of the 67 faceoffs.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"Every game is a grind in this league and tonight was no different. We found a way to get a win against a very tough Princeton team. Mitch Benson made some very timely saves tonight and we found some offense late in the third to pull it out. We will enjoy the ride over to Connecticut and then hit reset and get ready for another tough one tomorrow at Quinnipiac."
