HAMILTON — Colgate scored three second-period goals to earn a 5-2 win over Maine on Friday.
The Black Bears got on the board first when Nolan Renwick found the back of the net off passes from Ben Poisson and Lynden Breen as Maine went ahead 1-0 5:45 into the game. The goal came on a five-minute power play, as the Black Bears capitalized on it early.
Alex Young responded just under five minutes later with an equalizing goal.
Matt Verboon passed ahead to
Alex DiPaolo, who played a pass across the ice to Young for a shot he slotted into the net from the right face-off circle.
Three minutes later, Young scored his second of the night on a power play to put Colgate ahead. Verboon played a pass to the junior before he skated in and slotted a wrister from the same spot as his first goal.
After Maine scored an early second-period goal, Colgate tacked on three more goals in the middle frame to extend its lead to 5-2.
It started with freshman
Sebastian Tamburro netting his first career goal at the halfway point of the period, a tally that put Colgate back ahead 3-2.
Simon Labelle passed to
Tommy Bergsland, who ripped a shot that deflected off the goalie's pads and fell to Tamburro, who tapped it home.
Ross Mitton then doubled Colgate's lead with 5:06 remaining in the second.
Arnaud Vachon played the puck ahead to DiPaolo, who skated in and dished a short pass across the ice to Mitton for a shot he finished off.
Vachon then tallied a goal of his own just over a minute later to complete the scoring.
Nick Anderson hit the puck across to Verboon, who played a pass in front of the goal that went through a Maine defender and found Vachon as he slotted a shot into the net from close range.
Neither side was able to put one in during the third as Colgate's defense prevailed in preventing a comeback effort from Maine. The Raiders' penalty kill unit also shut down two Maine power play opportunities in the final period.
Carter Gylander made 11 stops in the third as he tallied 23 saves total and earned his ninth victory this season. He made five stops in the final minute and a half of the game after the Black Bears pulled their goalie and brought on an extra skater.
FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan
"I was pleased with the outcome. I thought our guys created some great scoring chances tonight, and of course,
Alex Young had a couple of pretty goals. For a first game after a long break and not having a lot of prep time, it was a nice result. We will continue to work on our attention to detail and bringing good habits to the rink every day. That is the formula for success. It will be the consistency in our effort and winning more one-on-one battles that will be the difference in the long run. We have a quick turnaround with a 4 pm. start tomorrow, and I guarantee that Maine will be ready to go to battle."
