Colgate and Vermont Play to 1-1 Tie

Raiders Outshoot Catamounts 43-35

HAMILTON — Colgate and Vermont played to a 1-1 tie Saturday, with the Catamounts getting the final edge after winning the shootout 2-0.

Ross Mitton scored the Raiders' lone goal in the game with 1:49 remaining in the second to tie it up at 1-1.

Both teams had four players on the ice after the Raiders got called for cross-checking and the Catamounts got hit with a hooking penalty a minute after. Colgate's penalty had just expired before the goal, giving it a power play. Alex DiPaolo skated behind the net and played a pass to Mitton whose initial shot got blocked, but he followed his miss and put the second shot in the back of the net.

Neither team could gain an edge in the third period with lots of back-and-forth action. Vermont had three power play chances in the period, but Colgate's penalty kill unit held strong, denying them on all three.

The game then went into overtime, with Colgate getting good looks from Colton Young and Arnaud Vachon during the period, but neither could score.

Vermont won the shootout after Matt Verboon and Levi Glasman each missed their penalty shots, and the Catamounts converted on both of theirs.

Colgate had nine shots in the opening period, but could not find the back of the net. The Raiders also picked up their first penalty kill of the game in the first after they got called for tripping with 2:15 remaining.

The Catamounts opened the scoring when they found the back of the net 8:50 into the game. Jacques Bouquot chased down a Raider player and tapped the puck to Joel Maata, who ripped a shot into the back of the net from close range.

Colgate had its first power play of the game at the 12:00 minute mark of the second after the Catamounts got called for hooking, but they could not capitalize.

The Raiders finished the game with a 43-35 advantage in shots. Colgate also dominated in the faceoff circle going 47-67.
