HAMILTON, N.Y.— Elliott McDermott scored the game-winner in overtime to help Colgate to a 2-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday night.
Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the first period. The Raiders held a 15-10 advantage in shots but both
Mitch Benson and Dartmouth goalie Justin Ferguson came out strong, saving every shot they faced in the period.
Benson finished the night with a total of 32 saves.
Colgate had two power-play opportunities in the opening period, the first coming at the 16:17 mark which was a five-minute major, and the second came six minutes later on a tripping call.
Just over halfway through the second the Big Green broke open the scoring when Tanner a Palocsik put one in on a power play to make it 1-0.
The Raiders ended the second period and began the third successfully killing off a Dartmouth five-minute major.
Later in the period, the Big Green got called for a pair of penalties but Colgate also got hit with a tripping call in between them. Although, the Raiders still took advantage of the four-on-three opportunity. After
Matt Verboon won a faceoff draw,
Nick Anderson passed to
Alex Young who one-timed a shot into the back of the net to tie the game with just under seven minutes remaining.
The game then went to overtime with the score knotted up at 1-1. During the extra period,
Arnaud Vachon got ahead on a breakaway and missed a shot but McDermott came in behind him and finished it off the rebound for the overtime winner.
The final shot total was tight but ended in favor of the Big Green at 33-31.
With the win, the Raiders earned a split in the season series after Dartmouth pulled away with a 3-2 win in Hanover on Nov. 5, 2021.

Head Coach Don Vaughan
"I am very happy for our guys. We have played so hard in a lot of games since November with not much to show for it. In college hockey, there are two seasons. We just passed the halfway point in the league this weekend. The sprint to the finish line is on. It will be fun."
