Colgate Holds Clarkson off the Board in 2-0 Victory

Midweek Shutout Fueled by Timely Goals and 21 Gylander Saves

POTSDAM, N.Y. – A highlight reel goal by Ethan Manderville ignited the Colgate men's hockey program on Thursday night as the Raiders rallied forward to a 2-0 shutout at No. 13 Clarkson.

The momentum led to Carter Gylander's first career shutout with 21 saves against the nationally ranked opponent, while the Raiders recorded their third win in the last four games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened with some significant defensive play for the Raiders as Clarkson looked to make an early impact. After resetting with an early timeout, the Raiders drew their first power play of the game and put up some looks. Although its chances were denied and then they went on to the penalty kill, Colgate kept the momentum up.

It was as the penalty expired that Josh McKechney made a team-first play. He blocked a shot and chipped the puck into the neutral zone to Ethan Manderville. Escaping from the box, Manderville flew down the sheet on a breakaway and scored to get the Raiders on the board. It stood as the only scoring play of the period, as the Raiders went to the locker room with a one-goal lead after 20:00.

The second period was one in which the Raiders faced a lot pressure from Clarkson as it looked to narrow the gap. It wouldn't happen in the second stanza though, as Carter Gylander made timely saves and big pad stops. Armed with another power play opportunity late in the period, Colgate made a push back into the Golden Knights zone but were held off from a second goal.

It was narrow on the scoreboard as the teams entered the final 20:00. As Colgate looked to increase its lead, Alex Young made a play by swerving around a defenseman to land the puck on net, but it was stopped on the wide angle, so the ECAC foes played on in the one-goal game.

Midway through the period, the Raiders held strong through a tough couple of minutes in their own zone and came out of it with another power play opportunity. It was with that man advantage that McKechney capitalized on a rebound at the edge of the crease to increase Colgate's lead to 2-0.

With the momentum, the Raiders were reenergized and were ready to face the extra skater Clarkson put out in the final minutes. Colgate got pucks out of the zone and were able to skate ahead to celebrate a 2-0 shutout of No. 13 Clarkson.

• Period 3 | 11:44 – After Matt Verboon took a shot from the top of the slot, it was saved by the pad of the Clarkson netminder. Josh McKechney was ready at the edge of the crease to clean up the puck with a poke over the pad on the rebound.

HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN'S TAKE
"Our preparation this week was excellent. The guys were very focused and the energy we had carried over to tonight. I have said it before and I will say it again, that Clarkson is an excellent team and they are hard to play against. They possessed the puck well in our end at times but our guys were willing to make the hard plays. We had 19 blocked shots. It's hard to win in this league and it takes that unselfish attitude to be willing to put your body on the line like that.

"We had great efforts from a lot of guys tonight. Carter made some big stops and our special teams play was solid. [Assistant Coaches] Dana Borges and Andy Boschetto have done a lot of work in that area and it's beginning to pay off.

"We will enjoy the ride home regroup and start to prepare for the rematch on Saturday."
