POTSDAM, N.Y. - After a crushing defeat in game one, it was time for Colgate to pick up its biggest road win of the year or head home. In a game one instant classic, Sydney Bard tied the game at 1-1 with under three seconds remaining before Clarkson netted the game winner roughly 12 minutes into the sudden-death overtime period. Game two would present a new opportunity for the Raiders to even the series and force a third game.
Colgate saw a strong start early in the first period, leading in shots on goal and finding decent looks in the offensive zone. The Raiders came up with a penalty kill early on, but it was the Clarkson power play unit that would send the visitors into the first intermission with a 1-0 deficit.
ECAC Rookie of the Year candidate Gabrielle David looked to have rung one off the post, but after further review it was deemed good to give the Golden Knights an early advantage. Liz Auby made eight saves over the first twenty minutes to limit the damage.
Not much was doing for either side in the second period. Auby came through once again with key saves to keep the Raiders within striking distance. Tanner Gates hit the post with a wrister in the waning minutes of the period as Cheel Arena breathed a sigh of relief. For a second consecutive night, Colgate went into the second intermission still looking for its first goal. Elizabeth Giguere heading to the box with three seconds remaining made the climb seem a bit less steep.
Greg Fargo's group wasn't able to capitalize on the power play chance despite a few good looks. The third period featured plenty of stalemate action until it became desperation time for Colgate. Auby skated to the bench with 45 seconds remaining; Clarkson tacked on an empty netter in the final seconds to seal the deal.
In her final performance in maroon and white, Auby tallied 27 saves and made several impressive plays to give her team a fighting chance.
