Colgate Battles Clarkson to 2-2 Tie

Raiders Fight to Final Seconds in Back-and-forth Affair

HAMILTON - After taking a 2-1 loss in Potsdam this past November, Colgate had revenge on its mind. To say the Raiders and Golden Knights have history would be an understatement considering the collision course these programs have taken in the two most recent postseasons. With the ECAC race winding down, points seem a bit more vital.

After spotting Clarkson an early lead in the November matchup, starting fast was likely a point of emphasis this time around. Rosy Demers gave her team exactly what it was looking for. Set-up by Taylor Kirwan and Noemi Neubauerova, Demers found the back of the net with six minutes remaining the opening period.

An early 1-0 lead over No. 7 Clarkson wouldn't last long. Michaela Pejzlova gave the Golden Knights an equalizer on a power play opportunity in the final minutes of the first.

Eleri MacKay put Colgate back on top just a few seconds after a Golden Knight was sent to the box. After a fast-paced first, the Raiders came out with a hard-earned lead.

Even with all the makings of a shootout, the second period featured no goals. Each time saw one power play chance, but couldn't overcome stout penalty kill units for a second time.

Liz Auby made several key saves to keep Clarkson off the board throughout most of the third period. Auby faced a flurry of shots in the final period and largely up to the challenge.

Ella Shelton knotted the game once again with just under four minutes remaining. For a second day in a row, Colgate would head to overtime.

Both sides hit the ice with a sense of urgency in the final five minutes. Both teams saw great chances, but goaltenders stood tall. A golden opportunity presented itself to Colgate when Clarkson star Elizabeth Giguere was sent to the box midway through the OT period. Despite a few close calls, Clarkson escaped without giving up the game winner.

Each team picks up a point in the ECAC standings. Colgate now sits at sixth in the league, one point above Quinnipiac and three behind Yale.

Bottom Line

  • Colgate 2, Clarkson 2

Facts & Figures

  • For a second consecutive game, shots were even in a tie. Last night the teams each posted 24, tonight was 25.

From the Source

Head Coach Greg Fargo on success of the power play

  • "It was important for the power play to get one. We've had really good looks lately but to get that go ahead goal was important. The power play was good tonight and brought our team a lot of positive momentum."

On two hard-fought battles this weekend

  • "We played two good teams this weekend and we knew it was going to be a fight. Our team was up to the challenge and I really like the way our team played coming out and scoring first on both nights. We played with heart; we want to build on this weekend as we head into the final stretch."

On the ECAC postseason race winding down

  • "This time of the year everyone starts watching the scores. It's important for our group to stay focused on the task at hand. We did a nice job and made a lot of progress this week as we look to play our best hockey at the end of the season."
