Raiders Fall in Narrow Battle

Exciting Tying Goal Falls Short in 2-1 Final at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – Despite a late tying tally, the Colgate men's hockey program fell in a 2-1 decision at No. 18 Quinnipiac on Saturday evening. Tyler Jeanson recorded the lone goal for the Raiders, while netminder Andrew Farrier followed up Friday's shutout performance with a career-high of 38 saves.

Colgate's back in action Feb. 7-8 for the home-and-home series against in-state rival Cornell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening period featured a quick chance for Quinnipiac, but Colgate was able to respond as Jared Cockrell picked a puck off in a flyaway faceoff. The move resulted in a quality turnover for a breakaway, but the rebound was left in the crease. There was another poke at the post by John Snodgrass, but passes were broken up leaving both teams to head to the locker room scoreless after 20:00.

The Raiders were forced to play a bit more defense at the start of the second and were able to hold strong until they faced their lone penalty kill of the night. A hammering drive at the net tied up players at the crease, where the Bobcats were able to cross the line for a 1-0 lead midway through regulation.

Colgate quickly had a chance to even things up as it was granted a power play opportunity, but were still held off the board. A beautiful combination came as Josh McKechney dropped the puck back to Tyler Jeanson for a ripper, but a pad save sent the puck out of play.

However with only seconds to spare, Jeanson found the back of the net on another team effort play to even the score at 1-1 heading into the third.

The momentum shifted from the drop of the puck as Quinnipiac returned with a top shelf tally just 17 seconds into the period. As Colgate attempted to answer, its drives were broken up into single chances at the net, including a tip by Paul McAvoy with under 5:00 in regulation.

A big opportunity came for the men in maroon when they drew another power play at 4:07 but were forced to pull their netminder with 1:03 to play. Even with the extra skater, Colgate made a strong push with under 30 seconds remaining, including two swift chances off the faceoff, but the horn would sound on a 2-1 final in favor of No. 18 Quinnipiac.

COLGATE SCORING PLAY
• Period 2 | 19:48 – Trevor Cosgrove carried the puck into the zone before swinging back to John Snodgrass in the circle. The senior then batted it center to Tyler Jeanson, who tapped the puck under the pads from the edge of the crease to even the game at 1-1 with just 12.6 remaining in the period.

STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
• By recording the lone goal, junior Tyler Jeanson posted his second of the year, and third point in the last four games.

COACH VAUGHAN'S TAKE
"We had a really good road game. We kept the play in front of us most of the night, but the turnovers hurt us a little bit. We've got some guys playing injured and some guys really stepped up tonight. I was pleased with our effort.

"I do feel like our power play is making some progress. It's the elephant in the room and a point of frustration for us, but we just need to keep working at it. We are getting more pucks to the net, so that's a start.

"It was a one-goal game and they scored on a turnover, otherwise it was pretty even. I thought we did what we wanted to do for most of the night."

On goaltender Andrew Farrier: "He's been playing unbelievable and he's such a good teammate. He brings the guys up and he's a vocal player. He's a positive guy and has that effect on our team. On top of that, he's playing good hockey."
