PRINCETON, N.J. - Aiming to avenge its only home conference loss of the year, the Raiders came into Hobey Baker Arena knowing they had a challenge waiting in the form of No. 6 Princeton.
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the contest. An early deficit wouldn't sink the visitors. Not if freshman Allyson Simpson has anything to do with it.Â
The Texas product netted her third career goal midway through the first period on a slap shot that proved unstoppable.
Â
Princeton quickly responded to take a 2-1 lead, but Simpson wasn't done. She tallied her second of the afternoon on a quick wrister with Tiger goalie Stephanie Neatby scrambling.
Â
Even following a thrilling first, the second period wouldn't disappoint. Colgate jumped out to a 3-2 lead thanks to Noemi Neubauerova. Princeton answered just a few minutes later to tie the game once again. A power play goal by Sammy Smigliani, her second this weekend, gave Colgate a 4-3 lead.
An offensive explosion on the part of Princeton would squash any chances of a Saturday upset. The Tigers tied it in the opening minutes, only to score back-to-back goals shortly after to claim a 6-4 lead. Sammy Smigliani scored her third goal of the weekend to cut the deficit to one. Princeton breathed a sigh of relief when a Malia Schneider slap shot hit the pipe and ricocheted wide. An empty netter by Princeton concluded a high-scoring affair in New Jersey.Â
