Raiders Light Up Dartmouth

Vachon’s Three-Point Night Fuels 5-1 Raider Win

HANOVER, N.H. – The Colgate men's hockey program routinely lit the lamp on Friday night on its way to earning a 5-1 win at Dartmouth. In their highest-scoring game of the season, the Raiders picked up critical league points behind Andrew Farrier's 34-save performance, and a three-point night by Andrew Vachon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate's penalty kill was tested early but as soon as Bobby McMann returned to the ice from serving his 2:00, he put Colgate on the board first minutes after the drop of the puck. Midway through the opening period Andrew Farrier faced a flurry of Dartmouth attempts at the net, but made flaring glove saves to keep Colgate ahead.

The Raiders went on to gain momentum behind their first man advantage, and shortly after the teams returned to 5-on-5 play Jared Cockrell scored. It was a two-goal advantage Colgate would carry into the locker room.

Returning to the ice, an early penalty kill was waiting for the Raiders. Dartmouth was able to capitalize on a bounce in the crease and a high puck to make it a one-goal game.

Shortly thereafter, the Colgate squad answered with a power play tally of their own while on a 5-on-3 advantage to regain the two-goal advantage. Colgate would strike again late in the period as Paul McAvoy added a number by splitting the pads of the netminder, so as to hold a hearty 4-1 lead heading into the final 20:00.

As the minutes on regulation waned, the tensions began to rise, resulting in a myriad of penalties. Although the Raiders faced a pair of penalty kills midway though, Farrier was steadfast in the crease while the kills just increased Colgate's drive. Arnaud Vachon answered with another for good measure, a move that would stand through the final horn for the 5-1 final in league play.

COLGATE SCORING PLAYS
• Period 1 | 06:47 – Colton Young picked the puck out of the corner on a turnover before passing it out front to Bobby McMann as he returned from serving his penalty. From the neutral zone, McMann fled on a breakaway a found the five hole for a 1-0 advantage.
• Period 1 | 17:28 – Arnaud Vachon sauced a backhanded pass from the boards to find Jared Cockrell in the circle. His quick wrister sniped the stick-side top shelf.
• Period 2 | 4:55 – While with the two-man advantage, Jacob Panetta fed the puck from the point down to Colton Young at the goal line. Young crossed the puck to the crease and found the five hole to score down low.
• Period 2 | 14:42 – The Colgate offense sped down the ice and maneuvered around the defenders for a 3-on-2 drive, where John Snodgrass crossed it out front. Finding Paul McAvoy, he popped it past the pads for a three-goal advantage.
• Period 3 | 05:19 – Vachon picked the puck off the blue line defender and went coast-to-coast before sliding it down low for a 5-1 advantage.

In addition to scoring his team-leading sixth goal of the season, Young racked up a plus-3 rating on the ice to lead the team with a plus-8 on the year.
• Between the pipes, sophomore goaltender Andrew Farrier recorded a season-high of 34 saves, just one shy of his career-best of at Miami (OH) last season (Oct. 27, 2018). It marks the second 30-plus save performance of the season from Farrier in his fourth straight start.
• Senior Jared Cockrell recorded his third goal in the last six games, and had a well-rounded performance including three shots on goal and a pair of blocked shots.

HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN'S TAKE
"We had contributions up and down our lineup tonight, from our seniors to our first years. Our penalty kill was exceptional and Farrier made the stops he needed to make, especially early in the game. When you get the offensive production from your seniors and first years like we did tonight that's a recipe for success.

"I was very pleased with our energy and compete tonight. The guys are taking ownership of this team and that's a great sign. We will enjoy the bus ride to Boston and then it's eyes forward to a very good Harvard team."

UP NEXT
Colgate continues ECAC Hockey action on the road tomorrow as it travels to face No. 9/12 Harvard. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. in the final game of the opening half.
