Colgate Drops Weekend Opener to Ohio State

Malia Schneider and Darcie Lappan Score in 6-2 Loss to Buckeyes

HAMILTON - Colgate came up short against Ohio State in the opening game of a busy weekend of hockey at Class of 1965 Arena.

The Buckeyes got on the board against Liz Auby twice in the first period. Both goals were credited to Ohio State leading scorer Liz Schepers. With a 2-0 deficit heading into the first intermission, Colgate looked to rally and get back in the game.

The Raiders did just that in the opening minutes of the second period thanks to an unassisted goal by Malia Schneider, her sixth of the season.

Scoring proved to be contagious, however, as Rebecca Freiburger gave Ohio State a 3-1 lead less than a minute later. Freiburger found the net once more, just 25 seconds following the ensuing faceoff. Ohio State would never look back.

The visitors tallied another seven minutes into the period to expand their lead. Darcie Lappan gave Colgate some hope of a comeback midway through the period when she netted her fourth of the season off assists from the MacKay twins.

Ohio State wasn't done; Emma Maltais added a last second goal in the second period to give her team the decisive 6-2 advantage.

  • Ohio State 6, Colgate 2

From the Source

Head Coach Greg Fargo on tonight's loss

  • "Tonight was not our night. We had many moments where we looked good and yet it wasn't enough. We had great looks, power plays and yet solely getting the opportunities isn't enough to win. I want us to be a team that finds a way to get the job done."

On his team's performance

  • "The game has a way of keeping you honest. We made some mistakes, perhaps thinking we could get away with one but those instances find a way to end up in the back of the net."

On a tough Ohio State team

  • "Ohio State is a very strong team and we knew that coming into tonight. Our group wasn't 100% in sync tonight and that was reflected on the scoreboard."
