Colgate men's ice hockey kicks off the 2017-18 Postseason with a familiar face as the Raiders host the Rensselaer Engineers in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament in a best-of-three series beginning Friday night at Class of 1965 Arena.

A New Season
With its three-point weekend, the Raiders finished the regular season tied with Dartmouth for fifth in the league standings. It is Colgate's highest finish since tying Dartmouth for fourth in the 2014-15 season. The Raiders are also home in the playoffs for the first time since 2014-15 when they hosted a quarterfinal, and home for the first time in a first round series since the 2007-08 season. Colgate has won each of its last three home playoff series, including quarterfinal sweeps in 2014-15 and 2013-14 vs. Dartmouth and St. Lawrence, respectively.

Started from the Bottom
Heading into the season, the Raiders were picked to finish 11th by the league's coaches and 12th by the media in the preseason polls. Colgate had a five-win turnaround overall and four-win turnaround in league play on its way to its fifth-place tie in the league standings. Colgate's 14 overall wins and 10 league wins are its most since finishing the 2014-15 regular season with 19 wins and 11 in league play. The Raiders are looking to get back to the league's quarterfinals and championship weekend for the first time since that 2014-15 season.

Scouting Rensselaer
Rensselaer has lost five straight games and 10 of their last 11 games to conclude the 2017-18 regular season. The Engineers did pick up a big win, upsetting then-No. 1 Cornell at Lynah Rink back on Feb. 3. Rensselaer comes into the weekend with a 5-25-4 overall record and finished the regular season 4-16-2 in ECAC Hockey. Jacob Hayhurst leads Rensselaer offensively with 12 goals and 23 points while defenseman Mike Prapavessis leads all Engineers with 18 assists and is second with 18 points. Seven different players have scored five or more goals and 11 players have double-digit points. Rensselaer has struggled offensively, scoring just over two goals per game. Linden Marshall continues to own the starting goaltender job where he has a 3.38 GAA and .899 save percentage with a 4-18-2 record.

Colgate-Rensselaer
Colgate is 60-63-5 in 128 all-time games against Rensselaer. The Raiders swept the Engineers in this season's series with a 3-0 shutout at home and a 5-2 win at Houston Field House. Colgate's sweep comes just one season after Rensselaer swept the 2016-17 series. This will be Colgate's first playoff series against Rensselaer since 2010-11 when the Raiders took the first round series in Troy, 2-1. Colgate is 7-9 all-time against Rensselaer in the playoffs.

Last Time Out
The Raiders picked up a much-needed three points to close out the season and secure home ice in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Trevor Cosgrove scored the game-tying goal with 48.6 seconds left in regulation to tie then-No. 19 Union, 1-1, at Messa Rink before the Raiders offense exploded for five goals in a 5-2 win at Rensselaer.
