Big Third Period Lifts Colgate to Season-Opening Win

Penner, Cockrell Net Third-Period Goals to Cap Raider Comeback

HAMILTON – Two goals in the third period powered the Colgate men's hockey team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over New Hampshire in the season opener for both squads Friday night at Class of 1965 Arena.

SCORING PLAYS
• Period 3 | 02:36 – After the Wildcats took the lead 1-0 with a goal in the second period, Tyler Penner got the Raiders on the board just over two minutes into the third period. Jacob Panetta banked an outlet pass off the boards to Tyler Jeanson, who won a battle at the blue line and circled the puck back to Penner. With a 1-on-1 opportunity, Penner blasted a near-side wrist shot off the left post and in for the game-tying goal.

• Period 3 | 10:46 – Penner's goal lifted the energy and momentum for the Raiders, who took their first lead of the night just over eight minutes later. With possession in the offensive zone, Jared Cockrell fired a shot wide from the right faceoff circle. Hunter Racine handled the carom off the boards and quickly centered a pass in front. Cockrell hustled in and beat a scrum around the UNH netminder to pound a shot over the goal line. There was a brief review of the play and the goal stood as Class of 1965 Arena erupted.

COACH VAUGHAN'S TAKE
"I really liked our start tonight. We came out with a lot of energy and generated a lot of shots. They got a couple looks in the second period and were able to get on the board, but I am really happy with our resiliency. You could see the energy on our bench elevate after Tyler [Penner's] tying goal and it was a great win for our team tonight. We are looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."
