CANTON, N.Y. – The No. 5/5 Colgate women's ice hockey team's winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Raiders fell to the No. 7/8 St. Lawrence Saints, 3-1, at Appleton Arena.
First-year
Malia Schneider (Millarville, Alberta) continued her torrid start to her collegiate career as she tallied her sixth goal of the season to extend her point streak to seven games. Schneider has goals in three straight games as well as four of her last five after her second period tally against the Saints.
Schneider's goal cut the Saints lead in half 6:23 into the second period with a great deflection in front of the goal. After
Jessie Eldridge (Barrie, Ontario) won a faceoff in the offensive zone,
Annika Zalewski (New Hartford, New York) tapped the puck back to
Kaila Pinkney (Denfield, Ontario) at the right point. Pinkney quickly shifted the puck to
Lauren Wildfang (Waterdown, Ontario) who wound up and wristed the puck towards the goal. Schneider was perfectly position in front of St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison to redirect home the puck.
The Saints jumped out to 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first period as Amanda Butterfield and Rachael Smith each found the back of the net, including Butterfield's on the power play just over the midway point of the period.
Lydia Grauer scored a key insurance power-play goal for St. Lawrence with 9:51 to go in the second period with the Saints on a 4-on-3 power play. Grauer's tally with the advantage gave the Saints two power play goals in the game.
Colgate pulled goaltender
Liz Auby (Stoughton, Wisconsin) for an extra skater over the final 2:40 of the game but could not find the net despite controlling the puck for the majority of that time. The Raiders had three shots blocked by the Saints defense while Harrison also made a save in that span.
BOTTOM LINE
