HAMILTON – Seven different Raiders scored in Colgate's exhibition game against the Toronto Aeros on Sunday. Colgate came out on top, defeating the Aeros 11-2.
The Raiders capitalized on five out of their nine power play opportunities, which proved to be a difference maker in the game, with Toronto finishing 0-3.
Sophomore
Jessie Eldridge recorded a four goals on the day, registering one power play goal and three goals at even strength. The Barrie, Ont. native got the Raiders off to an early 2-0 start, scoring goals 5 and 10 minutes into the game.
Lauren Wildfang added an assist on the first goal and
Olivia Zafuto dished out an assist for the second goal.
Toronto added a goal shortly after, closing the Raider lead to one with six minutes to play in the first period.
Shelby Perry swung the momentum back in Colgate's favor though, after recording a goal from
Chelsea Jacques with 2.5 minutes to go in the period.
Early in the second period, Wildfang pushed the puck up the ice to
Meghan Brennan who found
Cat Quirion on the top right corner of the arc. Quirion fired a hard shot that slipped past Toronto's goalie, giving Colgate a 4-1 lead. Five minutes later the Raiders found themselves with a power play opportunity and capitalized.
Megan Sullivan recorded her first of two goals after
Bailey Larson found her right in front of the net.
Colgate's lead would increase to 6-1 in the next six minutes in the period, as Quirion and Zafuto found
Shae Labbe open on the top left side of the arc on a power play. Moments later Larson and Sullivan would team up again, giving the Raiders a six goal advantage.
The Aeros logged a goal with 13 seconds remaining in the second period, bringing the score to 7-2.
Three Raiders totaled four goals in the final period, pushing the Colgate lead to 11-2. Annika Zalweski found
Anonda Hoppner who passed to a cutting Eldridge for the first goal of the last frame. Just two minutes later, Quirion and Zafuto helped
Breanne Wilson-Bennett register her first goal of the day on a power play opportunity.
Eldridge logged her fourth and final goal of the day, scoring just to the left of the goal. Zafuto and Hoppner each earned an assist on the goal, which gave Colgate a 10-2 lead over Toronto. With less than four minutes to play, Zalewski dished the puck to Hoppner, who found net with a hard shot from the right side of the ice.
Julia Vandyk recorded a team-best five saves on the day in 29:36 minutes of action, while freshman
Liz Auby notched a save in 29:47 minutes in the net.
Colgate opens its 2016-17 campaign on Oct. 1 in the Class of 1965's inaugural weekend. The Raiders face New Hampshire at 3:00 p.m.
