HAMILTON – No. 10 Colgate Women's Ice Hockey ended No. 4 Quinnipiac's 21-game unbeaten streak 3-2 here Saturday afternoon in a battle of nationally ranked foes.
Counting a Nov. 6 scoreless draw with the Raiders, Quinnipiac was riding an 18-0-3 run. That all ended Saturday.
The Raiders saw three different student-athletes tally goals and, despite allowing a marker midway through the final frame, were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Annika Zalewski netted her 12th goal of the year late in the opening period to hand Colgate the 1-0 edge heading into the first intermission. Kailia Pinkley started the play by passing the puck up to
Jessie Eldridge across the center line. Eldridge then brought the puck up the ice, finding Zalewski in front of the net. The sophomore shot around two defenders with her back to the goal, banking it into the corner of the net.
Just seven minutes into the middle frame,
Breanne Wilson-Bennett created a two-goal lead for the Raiders following her fourth power-play marker.
Olivia Zafuto passed the puck across the ice to
Bailey Larson to spark the Raider attack. Larson then tried her luck on net but her first shot was saved. Fortuntely for Colgate, the puck bounced back to her and she fired another attempt that again rebounded off the top of the post. Finally Wilson-Bennett, who was in front of the goal, collected it and placed it into the top of the net.
Unfortunately, The visitors answered five minutes later on the man-up advantage to cut the edge in half at 2-1.
Then with 56 seconds remaining in the period, rookie Zafuto tallied what would be the eventual game-winner thanks to help from fellow classmate Larson. The first-year passed from behind the net up to Zafuto, who was waiting at center ice. Zafuto then launched the puck into the top right corner past the Bobcats netminder for her seven marker of the year.
Despite the Bobcats scoring their final goal midway through the last frame and Colgate allowing three power-play opportunities, the Raiders continued their strong defensive play to hold onto the win.
Ashlynne Rando was stellar between the pipes for Colgate recording 32 saves, including two periods with double-digit stops.
With the win, the Raiders remain in fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings on 23 points. They hold a one-point advantage over trailing Harvard with four regular season games remaining. The Raiders and Crimson meet Feb. 19 at Starr Rink.
But first, Colgate heads to Yale and Brown next weekend for its final road trip of the regular season. The Raiders are at Yale on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Brown on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tilt.

"Our special teams and goaltending came up for us at key times. I give our group a lot of credit for hanging together and killing off a couple 5-on-3's late in the game."
