HAMILTON – Senior
Derek Freeman (Newburyport, Massachusetts) started off the season in style as he scored the first Colgate men's ice hockey goal in Class of 1965 history in the Raiders' 2-2 overtime tie with the Army West Point Black Knights Saturday night.
A historic night with many alumni and distinguished guests in the building, Colgate University officially opened the doors to the Class of 1965 Arena.
Freeman and fellow senior
Tim Harrison (Duxbury, Massachusetts) scored both goals for the Raiders while
Jake Kulevich (Marblehead, Massachusetts) notched two assists to lead the team in points.
Sebastian Weberg (Oslo, Norway) and
Ross Craig (South Glengarry, Ontario) each picked up an assist for the Raiders.
Goaltender
Charlie Finn (North Vancouver, British Columbia) became just the fourth goaltender in program history to play in 100 games with his start on Saturday night. Finn, who tallied 25 saves in the tie, is 19 games away from breaking the program record for most games played by a goaltender, held by Mark Dekanich '08.
Conor Andrie scored a pair of goals for Army West Point, with each tally coming in the final five minutes of both the second and third period. Clint Carlisle, Ryan Nick and Tyler Pham all tallied assists for the Black Knights.
Just over five minutes into the game, Freeman nearly put the Raiders on top with a highlight reel play as he chased the puck down and jumped over a Black Knight defender but was stonewalled by one of Parker Gahagen's 28 saves.
Later in the period, Freeman scored the first Raider goal in the Class of 1965 Arena to make it 1-0 with 8:17 to go in the first period. Weberg chased down the puck in the corner and passed it to Kulevich at the left point. Kulevich fired a shot on net that Freeman tipped past Gahagen.
Midway through the second period, Harrison notched his first goal of the year to make it 2-0 in favor of the Raiders. Craig sent a cross-ice pass from the defensive zone to Kulevich in the neutral zone where he hit Harrison with a pass at the blue line. Harrison streaked into the right faceoff circle and sniped a shot over Gahagen's glove.
Army West Point got a goal back with 1:41 left in the second period on Andrie's first power-play goal of the game. Both teams battled through the third period before Andrie tallied a second power-play goal with 3:04 to play in regulation to tie the game.
