Rando Solid in 0-0 Tie with #7 Quinnipiac

Raiders Compete Strong Against Nationally Ranked Foe; Rando Posts Season-High 44 Stops

HAMDEN, Conn. – Ashlynne Rando pushed aside a season-high 44 saves to help Colgate women's hockey to a scoreless draw with No. 7 ranked Quinnipiac here Friday night.

The Raiders saw Rando make critical saves, including killing off three Bobcat power plays to register her second shutout of the year.

Bailey Larson and Olivia Zafuto led the Raiders in shots with three, but Zafuto had Colgate's best chance of the game with one minute remaining in overtime. Colgate was pressuring the Bobcats in their defensive zone when Zafuto broke free, firing off a great look on frame. Quinnipiac's Lindsey West blocked her initial shot but the rookie collected the rebound and tried her luck again on net. Unfortunately, goaltender Sydney Rossman made a fantastic stop to keep the Raiders out of the goal.

The contest marked Colgate's third consecutive overtime game and fourth of the Raiders' young schedule.

Quinnipiac started the contest on the attack, launching five quick shots in the opening two minutes of play.

Despite the hosts holding the shot edge midway through the period, Colgate was awarded the game's first power play after the Bobcats were called for interference. Zafuto launched the Raiders' best attempt during the two-minute man-up advantage but Rossman was able to make the glove save.

The middle frame was much like the opening one with both teams having chances on net. Colgate then found itself on the power play five minutes into the period when the Bobcats were called for hooking. This time, first-year Larson recorded a great attempt for Colgate but again Rossman stood her ground.

A few minutes later the Raiders killed off their first power play thanks to two great stops by Rando on shots from Cydney Roesler and Meghan Turner.

Colgate's third extra skater opportunity came at the 16:19 mark of the frame when Quinnipiac was charged with roughing. Back-to-back shots by Annika Zalewski and Jessie Eldridge highlighted the power play but the Raiders weren't able to get one past Rossman.

In the third period, Colgate again killed off two Quinnipiac extra skater opportunities. The Bobcats, however, denied the Raiders on their lone power play attempt despite shots from Zafuto and Lauren Wildfang.

With neither team netting the go-ahead tally in regulation, the game was forced to overtime.

Overtime

With one minute remaining in the five-minute extra period, the Raiders had their best look of the contest on consecutive shots by Zafuto. Unfortunately, Quinnipiac was able to deflect any final Colgate attempts on frame to end the game in a scoreless draw.

From The Source
Head coach Greg Fargo (on the game) "That was a really exciting 0-0 game tonight. There was some good play by both teams. It was definitely a point we had to earn against a good team. Our goaltending was rock solid. Ashlynne (Rando) made the easy saves look easy and she came up with the big ones when we needed them. Our effort was there all throughout the lineup and I thought we looked good in some areas defensively that have been a focus for us recently."

"It wasn't a perfect game but I liked how our group fought back with our play at different times. It was a step in the right direction."
