Raiders Earn Key Point at Cornell, 3-3

Sullivan Leads Raiders with Goal, Assist; Rando Records 31 Saves

ITHACA, N.Y. – An excellent Colgate effort here Tuesday night resulted in a 3-3 tie against women's ice hockey rival Cornell.

The finish marked the Raiders' first point against the Big Red since 2009-10, snapping a 15-game losing streak. Tuesday's Colgate-Cornell result was the second in a row to reach overtime and the fourth in the last seven, with the Raiders finally gaining a measure of satisfaction.

The Big Red's Hanna Bunton found the back of the net early, registering the only goal of the first period.

The Raiders then came out in the second frame looking to score -- and did just that with two goals. Junior Cat Quirion got on the board first for Colgate to tie things up at 1-all. Then with just over five minutes remaining in the frame, Annika Zalewski netted a power play goal to put the Raiders up 2-1.

The third period saw three tallies, two by Cornell and one by Colgate. Christian Higham scored first for the Big Red to tie it at 2-2. Sullivan answered less than three minutes later to put the Raiders back in front at 3-2.

As the period drew to a close, Jess Brown found the game-tying goal with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the contest up and force overtime.

The extra session saw several chances by both teams but ultimately the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Big Red struck first on a goal from Bunton just minutes into the contest.

Heading into the second period down one, the Raiders were looking to knot things up. Quirion was up for the challenge, scoring her second goal of the season thanks to a great feed from sophomore Lauren Wildfang.

Zalewski added another goal off a Megan Sullivan pass, late in the second to give the Raiders the one-goal lead. Her tally came on the power play after Cornell was called for interference.

The Big Red pulled even at the 11:19 mark following a goal from Higham.

Colgate, however, regained the lead on an unassisted goal from Toronto, Ontario, native Sullivan. Her shot deflected off a Big Red defender and fell in behind the goalie's back for the go-ahead marker.

With time winding down, Cornell pulled its goalie Paula Voorheis to gain the extra attacker. That decision ended up being exactly what they needed and the hosts drew even at 3-all. Brown convert with just 17 seconds left on the clock to extend the game into overtime.

The extra period included scoring opportunities for both teams, with the best one going to Colgate on a shot from Bailey Larson that just narrowly missed the inside left corner but ricocheted off the post instead. The contest ended in a tie and handed the Raiders their fifth of the season.

Ashlynne Rando recorded 31 saves, including two goal-saving stops in the third period. With 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Rando made a shoulder save, keeping the Big Red out of the net and her team up by one. Less than two minutes later Rando did it again with a kick save on a blasted rebounded shot from Kaitlin Doering.

The Raiders are back in action Friday when they welcome nearby foe Syracuse to Starr Rink. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.

From The Source
Head coach Greg Fargo (on the game): "That was a really exciting college hockey game tonight. We expect nothing less when we play this team. We really wanted to walk away from tonight with two points but I commend our group on the battle we showed in the end. We played very well tonight and we had opportunities to change that game and put it away.
