ITHACA, N.Y. – After seeing the No. 5/6 team in the country come-from-behind to steal an overtime victory in Starr Rink on Friday night, the Colgate women's hockey team saw Cornell notch another close win, this time defeating the Raiders 3-1 on home ice.

The Big Red registered a goal five minutes into the game, but Colgate answered 3:55 into the second period to knot the score at 1-all. A little more than two minutes later Cornell took back its edge at 2-1 before finding the back of the net on a short-handed goal to ultimately secure its win.

"Today's contest was another up-and-down game against a very fast and skilled Cornell team," Colgate head coach Greg Fargo said. "We got off to a bit of a slower start than we would've liked but I thought we finished the game really strong. Our power play got us one when we needed it and we just couldn't cash in on anything else throughout the game. I thought both goalies played exceptionally well but they were just able to make the most out of a couple good opportunities that they got."

Colgate (7-21-2, 4-14-0 ECAC) received its lone goal from Melissa Kueber to shift her season total to seven. Taylor Volpe and Katie Case were awarded helpers on the goal. Sophomore netmidner Ashlynne Rando made a game-high 26 saves in the loss.

The Raiders were slightly outshot by their nationally ranked opponent 29-25 but kept Cornell scoreless on their two power play opportunities while Colgate converted on one of its three.

#5/6 Cornell (18-3-4, 13-2-3 ECAC) saw Jillian Saulnier, Alyssa Gagliardi and Hayleigh Cudmore all record goals in the game. Saulnier and Cudmore also both added assists on the night. The Big Red's goalie, Paula Voorheis pushed aside 24 shots in her fourth win of the season.

The Big Red notched the game's first goal 5:15 into the opening period when Saulnier finished one off past Rando.

Colgate would not go away, however, as Kueber's marker at the 3:55 mark of the middle frame tied the game at 1-1.

Unfortunately, Cornell didn't waste a lot of time retaking its advantage as Gagliardi's tally two minutes later put the Big Red up 2-1.

Almost six minutes later Cornell netted a short-handed goal despite having one in the penalty box to create a two-goal deficit between the teams.

Colgate tried to answer in the final frame firing off a game-high 15 shots in the third period, sparked by the stick of Volpe, but were unable to find the needed goals.

The Raiders are back on the road Friday when they travel to Rensselaer and Union for two games. Colgate takes on RPI Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Union on Saturday to faceoff with the Dutchwomen at 4 p.m.
