TROY, N.Y. – Colgate was led by senior assistant captain
Rachel Walsh on Friday night as she tallied two of the women's hockey team's three goals to help hand Rensselaer a 3-1 loss on its home ice.
"We played a really solid road game tonight," head coach
Greg Fargo said. "We kept our game simple and got some big plays and saves when it mattered most.
"RPI is a very tough team to play against. They are physical, strong and always play hard. They came really strong at us in the third period but we did a nice job of staying composed, which I was proud of."
Rensselaer scored the game's opening goal but Colgate scored three unanswered goals to come-from-behind to earn the victory.
The Raiders were solid on the power play holding RPI to 0-for-4 on the man up advantage, while Colgate converted on one its three chances. Despite being outshot by the Engineers 28-16, the Raiders scored a goal in each of the three periods to earn their eighth win of the year and fifth in league play.
Along with Walsh's top performance, Colgate (8-21-2, 5-14-0 ECAC) also saw fellow senior assistant captain
Jocelyn Simpson have a hand in each of the goals, earning three-points in the contest. She scored her sixth goal of the year, while adding her fifth and sixth assist.
Miriam Drubel registered two helpers as well to shift her assist total to 12 for the season.
Ashlynne Rando had another stellar night in net for the Raiders pushing aside 27 shots for her fourth win of the year. She also posted a game-high 17 saves in the final frame.
Rensselaer (10-17-3, 6-11-2 ECAC) saw Brandi Banks earn the Engineers lone goal as well as her first collegiate goal. Mari Mankey and Ali Svoboda were awarded assists on the play while Kelly O'Brien made 13 saves throughout the contest.
The Engineers started the game with a man up opportunity two minutes and 30 seconds into the opening period after Colgate was charged with interference. The Raiders used their strong defense to deny any RPI chance on net, however, to keep the game scoreless.
Both teams continued with strong scoring chances throughout the next six minutes but it wasn't until the 11:02 mark that the Engineers found the back of the net. Mankey and Svoboda teamed up to find Banks, who notched one past Rando for the 1-0 advantage.
The Raiders wasted little time answering the call, 37 seconds to be precise, as they knotted the score at 1-all thanks to Simpson's redirection.
Then five minutes into the middle frame, Colgate created a one-goal margin between the teams following a power play goal. The Engineers were called for interference, which awarded the Raiders an extra skater. Walsh collected the loose puck in a scramble in front of the net and slide it past O'Brien for the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner.
Late in the period the Raiders were called for hooking, giving RPI another man up opportunity. Despite three shots from the Engineers, Colgate was able to kill off another power play chance.
In the final frame the Engineers tried to break through to tie the score following shots from Mankey and Alexa Gruschow but junior
Katie Case came up with two very timely blocks to keep the Raiders ahead.
A little less than two minutes after Colgate killed off an RPI power play, the Raiders extended their advantage to 3-1 when Walsh recorded her second goal of the game. The Raiders used a 3-on-2 counter to score one from between the circles, sneaking it just inside the crossbar past O'Brien.
The Raiders are back on the ice Saturday when they face off against the Dutchwomen of Union at 4 p.m. in Schenectady, N.Y.
