Box Score HAMILTON – Rookie
Charlie Finn recorded his second 40-save performance of the season as the Raiders skated to a 1-1 tie with Rensselaer on Friday night.
Colgate (14-11-4, 10-5-2 ECAC) saw Finn make 10 or more saves in each period to finish with 41 stops, including 16 in the final frame and two in overtime.
John Lidgett had the lone goal for the Raiders, which was his first of the season.
Kevin Lough and
Mike McCann were given assists on the play.
The penalty kill for Colgate continues to play well and for the fourth-straight game it didn't allow a goal on four chances. The Raiders have killed off the last 17 opponent power plays.
Rensselaer (12-12-5, 6-7-4 ECAC) scored the game-tying goal with 57 seconds left in the regulation with Ryan Haggerty potting his league leading 23rd goal of the season. Mike Zalewski was awarded an assist on the play for his 13th of the year. Scott Diebold pushed aside 23-of-24 shots to earn the tie.Â
The Raiders got on the board first late in the first period with Lidgett scoring his first of the season with a beautiful redirection in the slot. Lough took a shot from the point and Lidgett was there to tip it between the pads of Diebold for the 1-0 lead. Diebold committed to Lough's shot that was going wide and he couldn't recover in time. It was the 14th time this season Colgate has scored first.
The second period featured no scoring but had some action with five combined power plays. Finn did his job and kept the Engineers off the board with 11 stops, including a pair of back-to-back stops during scrums in front of the net.
The Raiders had a couple of chances with the best coming from
Tim Harrison. He earned a breakaway by chipping the puck over an RPI defenseman at the defensive blueline. He charged into the zone and put a shot on Diebold. The goalie got a piece of the puck and it trickled wide of the net.
Rensselaer put on the pressure for most of the third period with a 17-8 shot advantage and it paid off with the extra skater late in the third period. With the goalie pulled, the Engineers won an offensive zone faceoff and the puck came back to Zalewski. He fired a shot that Finn shrugged off, but Haggerty hung around the creased and the puck popped out of Finn's glove and Haggerty was there for the rebound to tie the game with under a minute remaining.
The Engineers didn't take their foot off the gas after the goal as they almost took the lead seconds later after a scrum in front. The referees reviewed the play and determined the attempt was no goal.
In overtime, Rensselaer was able to get two shots on net, while Colgate couldn't get anything on Diebold and the game ended in a deadlock.
Colgate is back in action tomorrow night against third-ranked Union, who also leads ECAC Hockey with 28 points after a win over Cornell tonight. The Raiders got some separation in the standings as the Big Red and Clarkson lost home games tonight, so Colgate is two points up on its New York neighbors for third place.
