Junior Tyson Spink and Freshman Mike Panowyk Scored in Colgate's 5-2 Setback at No. 1 Boston University on Saturday

BOSTON – Top-ranked Boston University scored four times in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat ninth-ranked Colgate, 5-2, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at Agganis Arena.

Trailing 2-1 at the start of the final period, the Terriers tied the game on a goal from freshman Jack Eichel just 16 seconds into the frame before senior Evan Rodrigues notched the eventual game-winner on the power play at the 11:27 mark. BU added a pair of insurance markers in the last two minutes to determine the final margin.

Junior Tyson Spink staked the Raiders to a 1-0 lead just 4:20 into the contest. The two teams then traded power play goals in the second period. Freshman Chase Phelps evened the score at 1-all just 98 seconds into the frame before freshman Mike Panowyk put Colgate back in front, 2-1, on a man-advantage tally with less than three minutes to go in the middle period.

Colgate sophomore keeper Charlie Finn made 25 saves in goal for the Raiders while junior Matt O'Conner finshed with 27 stops for the Terriers.

Won-Lost Records
- Boston University improved to 9-2-1 with the victory.
- The Raiders slipped to 9-5-1 with the road setback.

How It Happened
- Spink opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period as he collected a pass from junior Kyle Baun at center ice and worked his way into the BU zone. He then went one-on-one with a Terrier defender and gained enough separation in the slot to get off a backhander that went over the glove of BU keeper Matt O'Conner for his seventh goal of the season.
- BU had a chance to tie the game with 42 seconds remaining in the 1st period as it was awarded a penalty shot after Rodrigues was taken down during a Terrier rush. Finn was able to preserve the Raiders lead, taking away the lower portion of the net as Rodrigues tried to slide the puck underneath him during the penalty shot attempt.
- The Terriers tied the game at 1-all just 98 seconds into the second period when freshman Chase Phelps fired a wrist shot from the slot inside the left post for his first collegiate tally. Senior Cason Hohmann and freshman Brandon Hickey were credited with assists on the play.
- Colgate regained its lead with less than three minutes remaining in the second period with a power play goal from Panowyk, who knocked home a loose puck at the top of the crease for his fourth goal of the season. Senior Spiro Goulakos and junior Ryan Johnston picked up assists on the man-advantage tally.
- Eichel tied the game at 2-2 16 seconds into the third period, taking a pass from junior Matt Grzelcyk in the neutral zone and entered the Raiders zone on the right side before placing a snap shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
- Rodrigues tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 11:27 mark of the third, burying a wrist shot from the slot for his fourth goal of the season. Grzelyk and Anti Oksanen drew assists on the power-play marker.
- Danny O'Regan and Rodrigues pitched in a pair of insurance goals in the final two minutes of the contest. O'Regan notched his eighth goal of the season at the 18:33 mark while Rodrigues added an empty-net tally with one second left.

Colgate Head Coach Don Vaughan
On game
"I was happy with our effort. I thought we worked really hard tonight. Defensively, we did a lot of really good things that we wanted to do. The third period we took some penalties that took a little of the momentum. It didn't feel like a 5-2 game to me. We had a couple of power-play goals against and we did not take care of the puck, especially in the third period. That is something you have to do on the road against a skilled team."

On Third Period
"I think penalties were a big part of our trouble in the third period. We liked a lot of the things we did in the first two periods. The guys that were taking the penalties in the third were our go-to guys. That certainly shifts momentum and they capitalized on their opportunities. We had some good looks on our power plays in the third. We couldn't find a way to get the puck to the net. We're short-benched a little bit and we're playing some guys a lot of minutes and when that happens guys have a tendency to make mistakes and we made a couple that hurt us.

On Playing BU For First Time In 21 Seasons
"It's fun to be here. We have a number of kids from the Boston area on our team and we have a great alumni base here. It's good to get back in and play them. Hopefully, this will be the start of something a little more long-term. David (Quinn) and I have talked about them coming to Hamilton in a couple of years when we open our new facility."
