UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Colgate women's hockey senior Taylor Volpe registered her 19th and 20th career goal to lift the Raiders 3-2 over Penn State in overtime on Friday night.

"Our team really responded well to a slow start tonight," Colgate head coach Greg Fargo said. "Everyone elevated their game in the third period and in overtime and we started to play our brand of hockey after the first 40 minutes. Credit to our leadership group for getting our game kick started tonight. We are learning what it takes to win consistently.

"Brittney (Brooks) was solid again in net and came up with some timely saves when we needed them early on."

Volpe's 20th goal was a big one as it marked the game-winner in a tightly fought contest.  Both teams earned 32 shots throughout the game and each squad was called for four penalties. Colgate, however, was able to convert on one of its four power play opportunities while the Nittany Lions were kept scoreless throughout their four.

Colgate (5-13-2) saw Volpe notch the tying goal late in the third period before she tallied the winning marker 3:55 into overtime. The Tustin, Calif., native also added an assist on the night when she helped Melissa Kueber score the game's opening goal in the middle frame.

Penn State (3-17-2) recorded two goals in the contest with Jill Holdcroft and Taylor Gross both finding the back of the net.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Colgate took the early 1-0 lead thanks to a wrist shot goal by Kueber in the first five minutes of the second period. Volpe found Kueber for her third marker of the season.

Almost two minutes later the Nittany Lions answered when Holdcroft knotted the score at 1-all.

Penn State was able to break through again to take the 2-1 advantage when Gross shot one past the shoulder of Colgate's netminder Brittney Brooks with five minutes to play in the period.

In the final frame, the Raiders turned up their pressure firing 13 shots on net. It wasn't until the 17:55 mark that Colgate equalized when there was a scrum in front of the goal. Hannah Rastrick played the puck towards net, where Volpe slide it past the Nittany Lions' goalie to send the game into overtime.

The Raiders continued with high-pressure outshooting the Nittany Lions 5-2 in the extra five-minute period.

After Penn State was called for interference, Colgate was awarded a man-up opportunity. With 1:05 remaining in the period, Katie Case saw an opening and tired her lucky on net. The initial shot was saved by Penn State's goalie Celine Whitlinger but she couldn't fall on the rebound fast enough as Volpe finished off the play for the game-winner.

Junior goaltender Brittney Brooks made 30 saves in the game, including two breakaway stops in the middle frame. Whitlinger notched 29 saves in the loss.

These two teams faceoff again on Saturday for a rematch at 2 p.m. in the Pegula Ice Arena.
