HAMILTON – In a span of 34 seconds, the Colgate women's hockey team went from down two goals to tying Vermont and earned a 2-2 deadlock on Sunday afternoon.
Colgate (3-12-2) got a pair of points from
Taylor Volpe with a goal and an assist, while
Taylor Craig had the equalizer for the Raiders.
Hannah Rastrick was given her first career point with an assist on Volpe's tally. Brittany Brooks was solid in net for Colgate as she made 24 saves, including a pair in overtime to earn her first tie of the season.
Vermont (7-7-4) saw Amanda Pelkey and Danielle Rancourt net goals in the tie, but couldn't hold off the Raiders in the final period. Roxanne Douville pushed aside 28 shots between the pipes with 10 coming in the final frame and overtime.
The Catamounts took the 1-0 lead five minutes into the game with Pelkey scoring on a wrap around. She received a pass from Brittany Zubeck and went behind the net and came out above the crease. She found a gap between Brooks' pads for her 12th of the season. Both teams had two chances on the power play, but neither could get on the scoreboard. The Raiders had an 8-5 advantage in shots in the first 20 minutes.
The second period also featured one goal and it came from Vermont as the Catamounts increased their lead to 2-0. Rancourt put home a rebound in front off of a shot from Delia McNally to give the visitors a two-goal advantage. Colgate had a golden chance late in the frame with a 5-on-3 power play for under a minute. The Raiders managed three shots, but couldn't get it past Douville. She stopped two shots from Volpe on the doorstep.
Colgate chose the right time to have its best period as the Raiders tallied two in the third period to force the 2-2 tie. The goals came 29 seconds apart and with less than eight minutes to go. The first came off a Vermont neutral turnover caused by Rastrick.
Melissa Kueber tipped the puck to Volpe, who broke into the offensive zone and fired a wrister past the glove of Douville to cut the lead to one with 7:56 left in the final period.
Craig was able to knot the score at 2-2 with a power play following Volpe's goal. The goal was a hard-fought tally with a scrum in front. Both
Miriam Drubel and Volpe put shots on Douville that she stopped, but Craig stuck with the play and hit the open net to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams went into overtime and Colgate had three shots on a power play that was called in the third period and carried over, but Douville snuffed them out as the teams settled for a 2-2 tie.
Colgate was 1-for-8 with the extra skater and the Raiders held the Catamounts scoreless on three opportunities. Colgate finished ahead of Vermont in the shot battle at 30-26.
This was the final game of 2013 for Colgate as the Raiders are not in action until Jan. 2 at Yale.
